Before and again after installing that app, all I needed was the little file I mentioned at the top of this msg. In other words I'm not so sure I ever really used the 2MB file. What I am sure of is that all these files are for Warp and not the MS-Win3.11 updates that have similar names and numbers. I do recall very vividly that several of the Win32s apps would fail until I completely deleted all versions of MS Win95 and Win3.1 from the HD that OS/2 was running on. The stupid apps would search the whole HD looking for special MS files and ignore my config.sys and autoexec.bat parameters. Took me over a year to figure that out. I became convinced it was part of the MS written install.exe for those 3rd-party apps. My main system is a 486 based mini-tower running Warp 3 Connect (Blue), the other is a 286 Toshbiba laptop runnind DOS 6.2. I am currently using "1st Reader" to handle mail, Fido and Usenet conferences. The software works equally well in an OS2-DOS full-screen or windowed session with a slight performance edge in a full-screen session. I use "1st Reader" on both the Warped system and the 286 laptop. I have also had great success under Warp with BlueWave (OS/2 native and MS-DOS) and Offline Express (for DOS). These are purely offline readers. "1st Reader" also works as a dialup terminal and one can write automated scripts for handling BBS messaging. JW> Any ideas on which might be best for relative ease of >use and customizability, without any significant sacrifice >of capability to handle and manage large volumes of fidonet >and usenet conference mail, and fidonet private mail, and >to perform such tasks that are directly relevant to mail? Currently I'm using "1st Reader" for handling mail, FIDO and Usenet conferences via a BBS. My home system is a 486DX2-80 running Warp 3 Connect (Blue) and "1st Reader" works well either full-screen or in a window. There is a slight performance edge with "1st Reader" running full-screen. "1st Reader" may be more complex than what you are looking for as it also includes built-in dialup capabilities. However this is OK for me as I have "1st Reader" automatically dial the BBS, download/upload messages through scripts. Also, I run "1st Reader" on my 286 Toshiba laptop under DOS 6.2 and it doesn't take up that much room on the HDD . Under Warp I've also had good sucess with "Offline Express" and BlueWave (both OS/2 native and DOS versions). My advice is to check them out and see which works best for you. Which may NOT be necessary, depending on what app you are going to install. Many CD sized apps for Win95 also have that library on them and automatically try to install or update any older version of the library files. Sometimes that works, such as with the older DeLorme CD apps. In at least 1 case TaxCut97 (??) overwrote a good working library and replaced it with a library that would only work for that 1 app. I had to reinstall when I finished using that app. I do have a large file which probably includes the full library: --- W32S125.Exe 03-08-96 2,287,298 Win32s v1.25 update. Apply to Win-OS/2, then download and follow instructions in vw32s125.zip. --- That includes: INSTALL.BAT 10-Jan-95 16:33 19 W32SPACK.EXE 28-Feb-95 16:38 2282547 Install.Bat says: w32spack.exe -d Running that creates 2 subdirectories named DISK1 and DISK2. DISK1 contains 75 files including SETUP.EXE _MSSETUP.EXE _MSTEST.EXE DISK2 contains 19 files. Both directories have a lot of *.DLL files. As I mentioned in a previous msg, some Win95 apps will not run under Win-OS2 if you have any version of MS Windows installed on your HD. Win95 apps that require Win32s v.1.30 may not run under OS/2 at all. But it has been suggested that if the app will install, then let it try to do so. But stop before running the app and RE-replace Win32s v.1.25 and then run the app for the 1st time. Some of the MS written Install.Exe for 3rd-party apps have been known to contain seek'n'destroy code aimed at any non-MS OS. So be prepared to completely reinstall OS/2. Maybe dozens of times. In some cases it is possible to bypass the MS written Install.Exe. That involves manually making the directories on your HD with the name the app expects and manually copying the apps *.EXE and some support files from the CD to your HD. Then make a Win-OS2 object for the apps *.EXE. And you may have to change some of the Win-OS2 Session settings such as Properties "3.1 Enhanced Compatibility". For over a year I fought with various Win32s installs. Some were a success. But when developers started releasing apps that required v.1.30 and none of the above tricks would work, I came up with my present configuration. I have Win95 installed on my old 486. I have Warp4 installed on my P200i. I have a couple of A/B switches that let me select either of those machines with only 1 monitor, keyboard, trackball and printer. But the best solution of all is to use native OS/2 apps.
