This is what Darrick Burch said to All below: DB> I want to be sure that Warp has better support for CD-ROMS with a DB> proprietary interface other than IDE or SCSI. Can somebody list which DB> ones are supported? I have a Sony CDU33A. Also which drivers are DB> included for sound? I am running a Reveal SC400 sound card. That doesn't matter.... if you purchase OS/2 Warp v4 (Merlin), you'll be getting a device driver CD and right now I'm looking at it right now and the Sony CDU-33A reader is supported by the base installation routine. Your sound card drivers can be obtained from the manufacturers homepage.... any questions?.. 8-) DB> Warp is supposed to network with Win95 machines right? I use Win 3.11 DB> to share an inkjet and I want to do it in OS/2. I couldn't tell you.. 8-).. IBM has a beta order service available for anybody. It's essentially a new version of Warp. If you're using Warp on your current machine, Merlin will work on it. For the longer story, see Warp's homepage. > Features? Many...even new DOS support features. Cutting and pasteing in DOS text mode sessions is now easier, nearly automatic. Voice technology is integrated right into the OS now...and it works. If, like many, you have tried voice recognition software in the past only to discover it's not quite ready for prime time; but would like to be able to use voice recognition that really does work... then OS/2 v4 will amaze you. It works without training at a reported 90% accuracy rate right out of the box. Use the included voice cancelling mike ($59 from Andrea if you buy it separate) and accuracy improves to 93%. Train it and accuracy goes to 97%. As you use it, it improves as it has a AI engine that learns from its mistakes...accuracy can approach near 100% over time. Java support is integrated. Supports TrueType fonts. Much more. > Sys reqs? Base system = 486/33 with 12 meg of RAM. To use VoiceType navigation = P5/75 with 4 extra meg of RAM. This system does not use VoiceType. It screams on a P6/200 with 64 meg of RAM...even with VoiceType. > Improvments over OS/2 Warp? Many...it's prettier. Easier to install and overall v4 brings OS/2 back to the position it has enjoyed for a long time...it is the most advanced OS available for PC's. > Cost? The "full" version form them was something like US$185 plus US$7 for shipping as I recall. I installed it into an "empty" HPFS partition. The only "OS/2" stuff pre-existing was the BootManager from v2.1. I would guess that the only reason for the "full" version is that there may be legal reason to make it available. The install book says that it will load on a system that has just about anything pre-existing on it. Three specific exceptions are: any version of NT, Warp Server v4.0, and any SMP version of OS/2. JS>PS, these are prces quoted in Canada. I have read that the upgrade price (tax+tax+tax+etc.) has been adjusted in Canada such that it will be in the CAN$120 range you mentioned. -Jim ___ * MR/2 * Teenager: 50% stomach, 50% lip and the remainder is common sense. --- TMail v1.31.5 * Origin: Diablo Valley PCUG-BBS, Walnut Creek, CA 510/943-6238 (1:161/55) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 252 OS2 DOS Ref: DDW00041 Date: 09/29/96 From: DALE SHIPP Time: 02:00pm \/To: NICKY MORROW (Read 3 times) Subj: Re: Merlin?? -=> On 09-28-96 08:37, Nicky Morrow <=- -=> spoke to Dustin Owen about Merlin?? <=- > Will it be as compatible with my system as Win95? One of its best liked features was that it ran windows applications better than Win3.1 did . Still, there are some applications that I have and use that are Windows programs and so need to be able to run them. As time goes on, I am certain that there will be WIN95 applications that look interesting, but I do not really want to switch operating systems just to run them. I would upgrade if it would allow that. There are some applications that I want to use that require version 1.30 of Win32s. In fact, I even bought one that did not say that on the box (said windows 3.1 or higher) and had to return it. dale@mbbs.com (1:261/1137.11) ...
