PS> 1) Do you want messages and files separated (like in Lora, Maximus, PS> AdeptXBBS, RA, Ezycom) or do you want something more combined, like PS> the conferences in PCB where there are file and message areas joined PS> together in different conferences? My present software (Synchronet for OS/2) has messages and files separated, and I have not had a problem with that, but I think the flexibility that PCB offers is a desirable feature. I don't think it's quite accurate to say that PCB joins files and message areas together. What it allows is for the sysop to retrict access to file areas based on which message conference you are in. You can set it up so that all file areas are available from all message areas, or you can set it up so that each message area has its own specific file area, or you can mix these options. But it seems to me that, if you are running a message conference on a specific topic, it is useful for the user to be able to grab some relevant file without having to back out of the message area, enter the file area, and then search through dozens of file directories to find the appropriate one. Another thing I like about PCB, although you didn't specifically ask about it, is the ability to associate with each message conference a news file and an introduction file containing information specific to that conference. PS> 2) Do you want a totally menu-based system (like Adept, Maximus, Lora, PS> Ra, Ezycom etc) or a more "one-menu-oriented" system (with support for PS> menus of course, but modified to work well with few menus, most stuff PS> handled from one big menu) like PCB? I want a system that is flexible enough so that I don't have to choose. One of the things I like about Synchronet is that, using Synchronet's scripting language (Baja) it is possible to offer the user multiple "command shells" to choose from. In fact, Synchronet comes with about five different shells as standard equipment, including shells that emulate PCB, MajorBBS, Wildcat and Renegade, and many others have been written by enterprising Synchronet sysops. Personally, I find PCB's command structure rather too complex, especially in the "reading messages" mode, so I think it is useful that PCB allows the sysop to insert a menu step into any command sequence. PS> 3) Do you want a lot of built-in light-bar funktions? And I mean PS> things like: File/message areabrowser sith support for ligh-bars PS> (insted of picking some number of name) PS> Light-bar-based "yes/no" questions PS> Light-bar-based file-browser (instead of pressing ENTER all the PS> time and T to tag a file, you could tag with your arrow keys, PS> and go up and down, and make big jumps, easier when there's a PS> lot of files in a area) PS> And other things like that... Yes. Especially, as you suggest, in the area of file browsing I think a light-bar-based browser could be very helpful. PS> The only downside /I/ can think of with this, is that when you PS> know exactly what to do, thingsmight get a bit slower, but a PS> cure for that is to combine light-bar and "the ususall" so that PS> every light-bar entry also have a key associated with it, what PS> do you think? PS> 4) Do you want fancy moving prompts and menus? I mean like support for PS> moving PRESS ENTER prompts, and some integrated support for animations PS> in menus and things like that. No. I find animations generally a negative feature. Apparently the original author doesn't know very much about PCB. Although the default system does come with most commands available from one huge main menu, that is not the way most PC Board systems have chosen to leave it. On my system, for example, I have message, file, bulletin, and e-mail menus all set up separately and available from the main menu. The key here is flexibility, and that appears to be one thing he's not taking into consideration. If he truly wants this to be a successful endeavor, he has to allow the system operator to do what he/she wants to do with the system. -> Personally, I find PCB's command structure rather too complex, -> especially in the "reading messages" mode, Agreed. But the system allows the flexibility to modify this or virtually anything else. --- PCBoard (R) v15.3/M 2 * Origin: The Communications Connection (1:215/130)
