Seems like there ought to be a way to set a flag for high-speed (or versa, for slow) users and use that to have Max decide which screen to show (the internal generated, or an extensive ANSI screen). There's already a setting in the MAX.CTL file for setting the min speed required for RIP and TTY/ANSI conpatability. The flag I spoke of earlier could be set by asking a multiple choice question in the NEWUSER regarding the speed of the callers modem, and setting the flag (ie 9600 or 14.4k baud and above callers would get the "H" flag set for "High-Speed") then in the MENUS.CTL you could add a set of display commands that would see the "H" flag and display the ANSI screen for that menu, and the normal internal generated selections could have the "!H" (I think) condition testing so they would NOT 'display' the ANSI stuff to all the callers under 9600 or 14.4k that DON'T have the "H" flag set... What would REALLY be nice is if there were a way to test the callers speed with a MECCA or MEX (Ooopps... I've gone off topic.. ;) and automatically set the flag without having to rely on a NewUsers' response. Dear All, I am despritly trying to set up a DOS door game under Maximus BBS, for OS/2 Warp. I have the menu settings correct, the [xtrn_dos] command... And the door game (LORD) is just set up right. But, when it loads up, Maximus opens up a DOS session to run this program. So, when it reads the drop file, it opens up COM1, which the other session (Maximus) is using also. Therefore, OS/2 comes up and sais, "Yo, LORD.EXE's trying to use COM1.. but..... Maximus is also using COm1. Ignore, End Program, or Rety Operation". Does anybody out there possibly be able to help me with this? Ever since I switched to an OS/2 BBS, I can't seem to run DOS door games. --- Maximus/2 2.02 * Origin: OS/2 Shareware BBS, telnet://bbs.os2bbs.com (1:109/347) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 251 OS2 BBS Ref: DCQ00000 Date: 08/18/96 From: MATT VALITES Time: 09:03pm \/To: ROLAND SCHIRADIN (Read 3 times) Subj: Anybody out there? I'm a registered sysop of Lora/2 and I've personally not bothered installing it lately due to the fact that you previously had to deal with all the update "hassels", i.e., get archive so 'n so and apply patches in this order etc. I'd personally try it again when a FULL release is out, or someone offers me some $$'s on my 5 node key. ;-) Seriously though, Lora's development has been very *slow* since my registration at v2.32. I've customized my Max/2 BBS with personally-designed ANSI screens, and I regularly receive comments about how fast my system is. I keep them clean, simple and standardized. MH> I've seen Max boards with elaborate displays, they were quite fast. I'm not a big proponent of so-called elaborate ANSI screens because they *can* be a burden on even the fastest modems and comm programs. Besides, I'm not the artistic type . You're more than welcome to call to see how I've done things. The number is below, and it's available continuously except during FidoNet ZMH. I've also devised a way of doing things that allows changes to be easily accomplished. I'll give an example, if you'd like. To what area selection are you referring? If it's the message area select, Max performs a scan of the areas as it's listing them. If you list the areas again, you should see a noticeable improvement. I personally don't like this, either, but I've not heard of user complaints. I've been too lazy to add it to the wishlist, so I can't complain, myself . My file area selection list moves quickly.
