DS> She's got Marilyn Monroe, Ceaser Romero, etc. etc. etc. DS> Is there much of a market for photographs like these? There is, if you are in the right place. There is a national magazine devoted to Autographs and photos. You should be able to find it at Barnes and Noble; I think it is called "Autograph". You can check ads in that magazine to see what the going rates are for some of the photos and autographs you have. You should know that the core group of people, nationally, who avidly collect photographs of celebs is pretty small. There is a peripheral group that collects certain things -- like Star Trek fans collecting cast autographs, but there aren't a lot of people who collect *everything*. I have seen many instances where signed celeb/actor/actress photos fetch only a few dollars. Unless they are a MAJOR star, like Marilyn, of course, or Rita Hayworth or Clark Gable or Cary Grant or early stuff like Claudette Cobert or Marlena Detrich, they are not worth too much. I've seen autographed studio stills of famous people like Esther Williams or Billie Burke (Zigfeld girl who played Glinda, good witch of the north in the Wizard of Oz) going for less than 5 bucks. Bob Hope stuff is cheap, so is Steve Allen. Ironically, Johnny Carson stuff, much more recent, is much higher valued than earlier stuff like Jack Parr stuff. Same with Jackie Gleason, whose photos and studio stills are very collectable. If what you have is of really famous people, you may have some stuff of value. I'd check with the autographs magazine. There is also another cool magazine out there called "Wanted to Buy". It consists of hundreds and hundreds of business card sized ads of poeple wanting to buy (obscure) stuff (as opposed to people wanting to sell stuff.) I'll look in the current issue to see if I can find any ads of people looking to buy old celeb photos and/or autographed studio stills. If I find anything, I'll post the names and numbers here. --- GoldED 2.50 * Origin: The Moonshadow :*: 916.343.0534 :*: Chico, CA :*: (1:119/50) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 250 COLLECTABLES Ref: EDC00000 Date: 09/07/97 From: JOHN GIANNINI Time: 11:16am \/To: ALL (Read 2 times) Subj: Dixie Cups Would anyone out there in Star Wars Collectors Land happen to know what a box of the 1979 Star Wars Dixie Cups is worth? There are over 40 Star Wars designs on the cups, and the box is almost full. I was told by several people that this type of collectable is worth a fair amount simply because, unlike cards, action figures, posters, comics, or other items that people buy to keep or resell, these cups were just used and thrown away by most people, putting them in the same class of collectability as most 50's and 60's collectables, from Lunch Pails to toys, that people back in those days just used and threw away when they weren't any good anymore. (This is what separates TRUE collectables from the "created market" collectables today, I am told. True collectables are specimens of things people never bothered to save - like 50's and 60's board games or lunch pails. When they broke or were no good anymore, they were thrown out and new ones bought. With today's collectables, companies literally "create" a limited market by limiting the numbers of items of a particular line they are putting out. These are actually "faux-collectables" though, because they have not stood the test of time and desireability of the stuff from the 60's and before, when people weren't saving things all the time.) Anyhow, if anyone has a book on Star Wars collectables they can reference for this item, I'd sure appreciate it. I was told this box is worth about $50.00 or so, but I just want to confirm that with someone who may KNOW, as opposed to a person who just supposed it's value. It's also possible that due to this type of item's scarcity, it's worth a lot more than I was told. Any info appreciated! --- GoldED 2.50 * Origin: The Moonshadow :*: 916.343.0534 :*: Chico, CA :*: (1:119/50) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 250 COLLECTABLES Ref: EDC00001 Date: 09/07/97 From: ROBERT O.
