Who built the motor? How much oil pressure did it have up high? If the motor is old, that is to be expected. Alot of times, not enough attention is paid to clearences etc when building a motor. That will shorten the life of the motor alot. It is said that you need ten pounds of oil pressure per 1000 rpm's. So at 6000, you should at least have 60 pounds. I like to have more than that. At the worst you are waisting a little bit of horse power and gas mileage. But that is a small price to pay in my book to make sure that you engine lasts. Yeah, they're acurate but tend to stick to the low side. It's got the factory oil pump (as far as I'm aware), so at idle when hot it's probably only running like 10-15 lbs of pressure which I personally don't like. At some point I'll probably put a high pressure & flow pump on it, but that'll take mucho bucks since I'll have to have a dealership or shop do it (no way am I trying to get to the oil pump on that monster). My voltage gauge seems acurate enough, always says positive unless the car's off. :) RW> I read an article today about an after market weight saving glass RW> hood for the Firebird with the ram air scoop in it. On theFBody mailing list their is quite a debate KH> regarding how much the Ram Air hoods/system helps. The consensus Hmm... thats unfortunate on the hood. I rather like the new Z28 SS hoods on the 97's and 98's. I don't want it for the emblem (which I wouldn't put on it anyways), I just want it for the nifty ram-air style intake because it gives some additional under-hood clearance. Do you know anything about oil pumps tho? Can I just stuff a good old miloden oil pump on it or will that freak something out? This is my first "new" car, I'm used to dealing with things like my '74 Nova and my '65 Chevelle. :) Can do anything I want, no computers to argue with. But my Camaro gets awesome mileage, has a power and torque curve that makes me drool, and has a 4spd overdrive tranny that makes the 3.8? gears not only reasonable, but turn less rpms at speed than the 3.08's I have in the Nova do. :) Heh, for the longest time I had a serious beef against the newer cars. But this Camaro has turned my mind to a new train of thought. Per the factory stats, it's making rougly 150 less horsepower than my Nova. And yet, it would eat it alive. Go figure. :) I have some seriously tweaked plans for this car. :) I'm going to get in touch with either Chevy Specialties or Callaway and figure out a price-range for what I want to do. First off, I want to reinforce the frame a little, maybe some stronger cross-members and a 6 pt cage or perhaps an 8. Then I want to drop in one of those nice mark v 502's mildly worked over and get an EFI setup for it (probably through ACCELL). Calloway has done it before, so they can probably do it again (as has Chevy Specialties). I'm guestimating something around a $35k pricetag for all the mods including beefing up the rear end and drive train. The good thing about the Calloway car they did, is they redid all the suspension too. More power, better handling... gotta like that. But I was thinking of a supercharged application, or perhaps twin turbos. Just depends what will fit where, clearance is pretty tight. --- Telegard v3.09.g1/mL * Origin: FidoNet [Novatech-TX].[972-475-3833].[Texas] (1:124/7006) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: FA300025 Date: 05/25/98 From: BILL REYNA Time: 07:03pm \/To: ANDRE RIOUX (Read 0 times) Subj: Eagle TALON > There's a guy selling an Eagle TALON for $12,000, and > I'm 16 soon to be 17.
