RH> I was wondering if you know much about tuning holley's. A tad bit. :) RH> here is the rundown on my car RH> 350 chevy RH> trick flow heads with 10:1 CR RH> cam is 224 @ .050 RH> holley street dominater dual plane RH> 750 cfm holley with vacuum secondaries RH> 12-13 inches of vacuum at idle Nice. RH> my problem is a surge at partial throttle or cruising speed. I read the rest. Here is what I want you to do. Get a spark plug wrench and drive the car. When the surge starts immediately shut off the engine and pull three to five plugs, around the engine. View each one carefully and make notes on what each cylinder looks like. This is called a throttle chop and will tell us more about the fuel distribution at the exact time of surge. I hope you know the difference in a rich and a lean plug versus a properly fueled one. You need several plugs to give an overall view of what is happening through the engine. This could be an intake manifold (wild chance) cutting off some slight fuel volume at constant RPM, etc. We want to know that each cylinder is getting the same amount of fuel first, then what the engine is doing during the surge. RH> I ruled out RH> a vacuum leak already. I jetted up to 74's and that didnt How did we rule this out ?? RH> power valve or the carb is still too lean. could the RH> manifold be RH> matching wrong with the new heads? It runs like gangbusters Not familiar with either to make this judgement. Single or dual plane, what CC heads, what RPM are we talking, etc. Have you sprayed around the intake to double check for a leak there ?? RH> matching wrong with the new heads? It runs like gangbusters RH> when I get RH> on it, but this is getting really annoying!! 8) There is something to be said for volume. :) --- FMail 0.94 * Origin: Running from the Klan in the Fiero (1:123/30) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F5I00010 Date: 05/13/98 From: BILL REYNA Time: 09:45am \/To: DAVE GOSTL (Read 0 times) Subj: NEW VINYL TOP?? > I just stripped the vinyl top off my '76 Cutlass and > found a couple of > Bondo patches under the paint. [----------^^^^ you said the above ^^^^-----------] The factory just doesn't use "bondo" at all. Since you found it under the vinyl top, it probably was done when a new or replacement top was installed. Why, because it wasn't painted and that saves the installer the process of painting etc. -_-_-Bill --- * Origin: Bordertown - Telegram from the Border (1:234/43) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F5I00011 Date: 05/14/98 From: JOHN FAERBER Time: 01:00am \/To: ROY WITT (Read 0 times) Subj: Timing RW> The timing is controlled by the computer. Later When you're putting out 430HP, a 750 works real good, in fact, it's what you need. As far as compression... 10:1 should run fine on 92 octane fuel, and considering the heads he has are aluminum, he cna probably run all the way down to 89 octane. I'm running 9.5:1 on iron heads and 20 degrees BTDC timing, and I BARELY get a ping sometimes. Jason Wedehase strife66@Psynet.net http://www.Psynet.net/strife66 ... I know that a with a 750cfm, you can make as much as 800 hp. But I cant ignore that it helped me even though traditionaly it is know to be too much carb. As for the compression...according to Trick Flow, you can raise your compression level a whole point without changing the octane level. The reasoning is that heat in the combustion chamber is your worste enemy. Aluminum gets the heat out in a hury. with 9:1 CR, I was getting away with 87 oct. I am not sure how high I will have to go now with the new heads. As you can see by the last post, I just put the heads on. I had ten gallons of 87 left in the tank so I put two gallons of 100 octane race gas in it to make up the difference in the mean time. the next tank of gas, I am going to try 89 and if it pings, I will add a gallon or so of race gas again. and so on...I will go up as needed. later, Randy --- QScan/PCB v1.19b / 01-0154 * Origin: MicroLink BBS * Dinuba, CA 209-591-8753 (1:214/80) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F5I00014 Date: 05/14/98 From: DAVE GOSTL Time: 04:24am \/To: TOM WALKER (Read 0 times) Subj: ENERGY ABSORBING BUMPER *Hello TOM WALKER On 05-02-98 you wrote... This difference will be whether or not you have a plain jane 3.8L V6 or a 3.8L V6 with turbo... After further research, the book says you have both. Something you might be surprised to know is that cylinders 1-4, 2-5 and 3-6 are paired up and are fired as pairs. The cylinder under compression is fired, as well as the paired cylinder is fired on it's exhaust stroke. Input signals from the Hall effect sensor on the crank (rpm and crank position) and camshaft (TDC #1) position sensors are used to determine engine speed and piston position. All managed by the ECM. There are camshaft and crankshaft sensor adjustments. But I would recommend that you take it to a qualified mechanic to have it set. If you feel you can handle it, I'll forward the timing sequence if you want. BTW, are you sure it's set at 20BTDC? Factory says 25ATDC for the cam sensor and other than a clearance adjustment, nothing is mentioned about crankshaft sensor timing.... ...
