It sounds like carburetor in one way or another. It could be due to a cold engine, mine will do that when cold. It could be too rich, that's why mine does that =). It sounds as if, possibly, it could be timing, too. Maybe it just needs to be timed up again. However, most likely, it seems that it's running rich... or lean even... hmm.. I'm confused. Does it blow black smoke out the back when you do that? That means rich. I don't know enoug about Quadra-Jets (your carb) to really help you, but I'm almost positiev it's carb. A couple of things to look at would be the idle kickback adjustment. This pops out when you press the accelerator and resets back to position after a short delay when the accelerator is returned. This keeps the car at about 1200rpms and the triggers back to about 600-800rpms after the delay. The other thing is that the car is almost the age when GM started placing Throtle Positioning Sensors (TPS) on thier carbs. But they will usaully idle high for a long period of time before reseting back to the idle. May also want to try a simple tune-up. New plugs, distributor cap and rotor button, new air cleaner and the one everyone alwats forgets, the fuel filter. RM> Someone said something about fiberglass plates a while back RM> being less fussy but I haven't looked into it too deeply. There's a space at the bottom of batteries for that stuff that flakes off to fall into and not do any harm, but I expect it's gotten smaller with the trend towards lower-profile batteries. There was also something I saw one time about them enclosing one set of plates (positive? I can't remember which one it was) in some sort of an envelope, basically a plastic bag with a *lot* of perforations which would tend to avoid shorts like that. The oldest batteries out there (and a very small number of the current crop, as well as some smaller motorcycle batteries) used to connect from one cell to the next by going out the top, and having a connecting strap. In the interests of shorter curent paths (and I guess it make a difference when you're pulling hundreds of amps for starting) they changed this to go through the partitions. That aspect of things needs to be manufactured very carefully, or you have a tendency towards bad connections, or even leakage from one cell to the next. A bad connection inside a battery is usually evidenced by heat, and it can get to the point where when you load it the electrolyte actually starts to boil. If you've got a battery that's giving you a rotten-egg smell when you hit the starter, better change it out because that's what's going on. Leakage between cells is worse yet, you don't just get a dead cell, you get two of them, as the positive plates in the one interact with the negative plates in the other, and you've got two sets of plates that are out of action. Problems with this sort of thing seem to me more common, in my experience, with the lower-profile batteries. Unfortunately, with them lowering the front of the hood on many newer cars over the past decade or two, almost all of them have gone to using lower-profile batteries. The "standard" stuff went from group 24 to group 34, the side-terminal units went from group 74 to group 75 and 78, and almost all of the Ford stuff out there will use either a group 58 or a group 65. Funny how the imports don't seem to be going that route, though. email: roy.j.tellason%tanstaaf@frackit.com --- * Origin: TANSTAAFL BBS 717-432-0764 (1:270/615) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F5G00034 Date: 04/11/98 From: TODD JASPERS Time: 04:20pm \/To: JOHN PUMMILL (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Well. `07*** Quoting John Pummill from a message to Sean Dunbar ***`07 SD> I shut down my board. 2 calls a day is NOT worth it for SD> anything.
