Street legal cars were always more fun to watch than Rails and Funnies (I thought anyways). As to 'Big Bodies'... When I was building Chevelle's they were considered SMALL bodies. Other guys were running Impala SS's and Ford Cobra's and Dodge Charger's... They were the 'bigger' bodies. Chevelle's and GTO's were 'lightweights' - anything under about 3500 lbs. Things change... The #alternatives range from cutting the dent out and welding in a new piece #(extreme), to drilling holes and pulling the dent out with a slide #hammer. I understand that some body shops can seal the tank and apply #enough air pressure to blow the dent out. A really sloppy approach is #to fill the dent with Bondo and paint over it. RT#This weekend a buddy suggested filling the tank with water and freezing #it. Theoretically, when the water expands, it will force the dent out. #Sounds plausible, simple, painless, and by far the easiest. Not good plans... I used to custom paint bikes for a living and ran into this sort of thing from time to time.... You MIGHT be able to put some soapy water all over the dented area and use a bathroom type plunger to 'suck' out the dent. That's about the only option that I would try. Anything else mentioned so far is more likely to split the tank at the seams. Drilling and pulling it out is a last resort. It's not too bad but leaves you with a welding job after. Another possibility... take a hammer and make the dent into a better shape - add some bondo to smooth it off and leave it as part of the new tank shape... B) --- # SLMR Rob # The docs? The increase in specific volume (decrease in density) causes a hoop stress. Whether the container bursts depends on the amplitude of hoop stress and the ultimate tensile strength. Of course you have to make some corrections for stress concentrators such as sharp bends, crimps, welds, bolt holes, etc. BM> ML> freezing but it isn't. The fact that the density is greatest BM> ML> at 39F (4C) is the reason that ice will float. BM> BM> Nope! That is not the reason ice floats. The reason ice floats (and I BM> might be wrong about the 11% figure, that's just an estimate) is BM> because ice is less dense than liquid water. It's why engine blocks BM> will crack if frozen. Why most containers will bulge or burst if the BM> water contents are frozen. At ambient pressure, liquid water has its greatest density of 62.43 lbm/cuft at 40F (4C). Its lowest density is 59.83 lbm/cuft at 212F (100C). The ratio between these extremes in density is 1.043 or a 4.3% difference in density. (Source: Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual, Ninth Edition.) Density of liquid water increases almost linearly from 212F to 40F. Then the density decreases from 40F to 32F. As I said earlier, the peak density at 40F. Some selected densities of liquid water at amospheric pressure: 32F 62.42 lbm/cuft 40 62.43 Highest density, lowest sp.volume 70 62.30 150 61.20 200 60.12 212 59.83 Lowest density, highest sp.volume I must disagree about why ice floats. The reason that ice floats is because solid water near 0C is less dense than liquid water near 0C. Water is unique in the way that it actually increases in density just above its liquidus-solidus point. That aspect gives ice just that much more buoyancy. The reason the engine block will crack when frozen is because the hoop stress or normal stress exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of the material. The bottom line is that if you want to expand the liquid water, then heat it rather than freeze it. If you use 70F as a reference, then heating to 212F (but not quite to boiling) causes a 4% INCREASE in specific volume. On the other hand, cooling from 70F to 32F (but not quite to freezing) causes a 0.2% DECREASE in specific volume. (Remember that specific volume is the reciprocal of density.) --- QScan/PCB v1.19b / 01-0232 * Origin: IBMNet Connection - Indpls, IN - 317-882-5575 28.8 USR (1:231/1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F5G00009 Date: 04/15/98 From: MARK LOGSDON Time: 09:50pm \/To: ROY WITT (Read 0 times) Subj: Timing belt lifespan? I JP>KH> would recommend JP>KH> them highly! Put them on the Bimmer, you won't be JP>KH> disappointed! JP> Kewl, if I ever get through this set of Michelins I will think about em. Those SZ50s are friggin' awesome! 2 weeks ago I lined up with a '95 Camaro Z28 at a redlight. The guy was real nice, car was stock. We both took off, I put it to the floor quickly, though I didn't floor it right away. I got a nice launch, probably the equilavent of a 2.1 60 foot time. I ended up winning by about 2 1/2 car lengths up to 80mph. I figure winning by 2 1/2 cars in what basically amounted to an 1/8th mile race was what I would expect being as his car was stock. Anyways, with those crappy Proxes, 1st gear was unusuable. If I went WOT in 1st gear at anytime the car would be all over the place. Those Firestones hanlde quite well as well. I have to admit, I do like the way the Formula handles with the Eibachs burt its still not what I want. Its funny because all of my friends think my car has awesome handling, because of course it outhandles fox body Mustangs, but its nothing near a car like yours. I have pretty much given up on it. The car absolutely sucks going over bumps in mid-turn. It makes me really want a Supra Turbo, a nice used one :-) By the way, I know a few people with the new '98 FBodies with the LS1. One guy has the stock 3.42 gears, everything is stock, a 6 speed, its a Z28 1LE, this guy went 13.1 @ 108mph! 13.1 @ 108mph! That is awesome! And yes, I know its true I have seen the slips! Thats the best though, average is 13.3-13.5 for the 6 speeds, and 13.5-13.8 for the A4s. A 3.23 geared A4 usually goes 13.5-13.6, and I think thats excellent! I have seenn dyno tests showing 13-14 horsepower from a cat-back exhaust system. (dynos that friends of mine have had done, not in magazines). I haven't seen what a K&N dynoes at with these cars, but I think its safe to assume it would help about the same as it does with my car, about 10 hp.. So if I had my two mods on an A4 LS1 FBody, its safe to assume I would be at about 13.2 or 13.3 with my BFG drags. I think thats awesome! WJP>KH> Yeah, everything is fine now. I know we are all people and will occasionally get bent out of shape with off topic conversations from time to time. (who was it that was having a Howitzer conversation in here...) Please keep these off topic threads short and sweet. The topic IS Automotive but I am liberal enough that if you can tie whatever into transportation I will usually not say anything. 2. Cars and profanity go hand in hand in the real world. However, this is Pummill's World and I ask that profanity be kept to a BARE minimum. 3. If someone asks a "stupid" question do NOT flame them or you will get REAL nasty netmail from me. The idea is to bring MORE people into the world of automotive knowledge, not drive them away with snide comments. If you cannot say anything nice then keep the fingers away from the Reply key. 4.
