The tank is made by deforming a flat sheet of steel into an irregular shape, in punch press. That puts what we call in the trade, "stresses in the material" and it now has a memory. However, not enough memory for a magnet to work. Once it's pulled out like I describe above, it's memory will help to reshape it. ... I've seen batteries that showed good on all cells with a hydrometer and you still couldn't pull any power out of them. That points to a bad connection inside somewhere. I was just making sure it wasn't destroying my engine while I waited for the weather to improve enough for wrenching in the driveway... which I got a good dose of this week when my truck fried the battery one day and the one year old starter motor the next... Thanks for that info, then I'll stick to the body panels for any help. I had first seen that work on a body panel when I was a teenager, it was real handy if you couldn't reach the other side of the panel. Curious, is a gas tank made out of thick metal or something?
