Turns out that I had to set the screws to both be 3 1/2 turns out. This is the correct setting apparently for this carb on my car. No more O2 sensor (lean) errors when sitting at lights. Not to mention, the car purrs, and runs 100% perfect now. I also turned down my cold idle, as it was idling way too high before when cold. I think things are improving. I am still not getting the best gas mileage in the world, but I don't think I ever will in this car. It is just too heavy, the engine is large, and my trips are normally too short. - Mark weather@bcpl.net --- WWIVToss v.1.40 Registered * Origin: Weather Station, Baltimore, MD *USA* 410-882-8887 (1:261/1304.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F3P00006 Date: 03/17/98 From: LUKE HILL Time: 05:15pm \/To: GARY HARDIN (Read 0 times) Subj: 1966 GMC Pickup Hi Gary, GH> Since parts for this truck are pretty inexpensive, I am going to GH> replace GH> the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points and condenser, and probably the Yeah I have a feeling it could be something to do with the spark plugs or cylinders acting up.. Pull the plug wire and there's no engine GH> change. Pull the plug and it is oily and wet. Yup. #4 definately has a problem. Could be valve stem seals or worse, a broken ring or possibly a busted piston. The only way to tell is to do a compression check and a leak down test. Last resort is to or pull the head. GH> I'm going to try a hotter plug and see what it does. That'l be a temporary fix. Did that on an old 57 Chevy once. It lasted another year, but kept getting worse as time marched on. GH> Once in a while I get a backfire thru the carb when starting. GH> Could that be a valve problem? Hard to say. It's probably something to do with #4. Either it's a stuck valve or there could be a hole in the piston. That would be my guess at this point, without actually hearing it run. To check the hole theory, pull the valve cover oil cap and watch for puffs of smoke while the engine is idling. If there's no smoke, put your hand over the hole and see if you can feel any pressure build up. If any cylinder is pushing air, you'll feel it. GH> ... DANGER! DANGER!
