G'day Gary, The circuit to sense a failed brake light (globe) used by several car and truck manufacturers was based on a relay with two current windings. Whenever the current was balanced the relay would NOT energize (differentially wound). If a globe in either the right or left side of the vehicle went open circuit, then the current flow through the two windings would be out of balance and energize the relay contactor and illuminate a warning light on the dash. Similar relays were used to indicate a fault condition in indicator lights, or to operate a "slave relay" for truck trailers etc. These were commonly available from Hella, Bosch, Delco-Remy et all. PS: I agree with Mark, the circuits produced to date in this forum won't successfully indicate a faulty headlight globe. At least not those based on the "blown fuse indicator", simply because that had a Neon indicator (plus current limiting resistor) wired in parallel with the fuse. If the fuse went open circuit, then the neon would light provided a current path was available, usually via the load. But the circuit(s) shown/discussed are just two parallel current branches, and what happens in one branch has, for all practical purposes, no effect on the other. However if two headlights are connected in series (as is/was the case in some Japanese cars) prior to switching them in parallel, then it's possible to use the "blown fuse indicator system" of indicating if one or the other globes is faulty. However a current coil (or two) wound over a "reed relay" (either NC or NO) and the latter connected to a red or green LED (via the 12 volt supply and a suitable current limiting resistor) would do the job nicely. Have been looking at buying a car (mine was totalled and have one to drive short term) and have noticed that the Pontiac Grand Ams have the seatbelts anchored to the door which would seem unsafe ie: in an impact the door flies open and out goes the driver as there is nothing at that point to hold the person in the car. Has GM had a recall, or have they implemented a repositioning of the seatbelt anchor to the B pillar? --- Maximus/2 3.01 * Origin: * MacSavvy OS/2 BBS * Dallas, Texas * 972-250-4479 * (1:124/1208) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F3F00002 Date: 03/10/98 From: DENNIS FARKAS Time: 04:43pm \/To: RUBEN LOPEZ (Read 0 times) Subj: El Paso AG> Well we in Europe pay $1 per LITRE, and there's five litres to a AG> gallon. No biggie the same thing can be done with a AVOM the analog meter can be purchased at Radio Shack for less than 5 bucks The M/C works on 12 vdc so 6 vdc will = 30 deg dwell it is measured on the Ground side of the solenoid so 0 volts is a full lean command and 12 volts is a full rich command so what you need is switching between both sides of 6 Volts got it. --- PPoint 2.02 * Origin: Terlton the Oklahoma Jungle 74081 (1:170/302.16) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F3F00004 Date: 03/11/98 From: GARY HALL Time: 12:02am \/To: MARK LOGSDON (Read 0 times) Subj: OHM'S LAW On (09 Mar 98) Mark Logsdon wrote to Gary Hall... Anyways as he got in front of me, his car was mkaing waves, I felt my car get squirrely for a second, and that was it. I started spinning. To make a long story short, I was unhurt, and the car ended up in a ditch. Damage wasn't too bad though, some front end damage, front suspension damage, the panel under the driver's side door was messed up, and two flat tires. Still, everything was taken car of for les the $2,000 so I was happy with that!
