My first encounter driving a Corvair was a 62 or 63 Spyder model. I worked part time in a gas station and had the opportunity of picking up and returning a customers' car for service. On the return trip I took a short cut over a small wooden bridge that had an approach and exit of 90 degrees. A 180 degree hairpin turn with a bridge in the middle of it, if you will. I was impressed. In those days I was only concerned with straight line performance, but here was a car that had it all. Too bad I'd just bought a new 65 Malibu SS and couldn't afford to trade it for a Corvair...then again, maybe it was just as well. John, I can easily check the fan clutch on my 79 Ford van by getting it well up to operating temperature, then stopping and letting the engine stay off for a while - say 10 minutes (refueling) then restarting -thus allowing a heat buildup. If the fan clutch is working properly there will be a noticable difference in the noise the fan generates and after a bit of driving the noise will decrease noticablly when the clutch disengages.
