The principle is That's enough wrong with it. The LED was the whole point of his circuit. The LED was placed between ground and ground, and that means there is no voltage source to cause current through the LED under any circumstances. GH> simple Electrical current takes the point of least resistance I GH> used a ! to show changes I made to his schematic it should work if GH> the headlamp burns out the current will flow through the resistor GH> and illuminate the LED this is called a Shunt. What you've done is power the LED all of the time. At least you're providing a voltage source for the LED, but you've still accomplished very little. Roy never provided current, while you are always providing the same current. In your revised circuit below, the right side of the headlight switch is still at 12 volts, regardless of whether the headlamp is open circuited. You will always get a current through the 220 ohm resistor and the LED equal to I = V/R = (12-Vx)/220, where Vx is the LED forward voltage. If the LED voltage is 2.1 volts, then the current will always be I = (12-2.1)/220 = 9.9/220 = 0.045 amperes. In other words, you'll have 9.9 volts across the resistor and 2.1 volts across the LED. I'll show the voltages and the current below. GH> )--(Headlight Switch)-+ Low GH> | beam GH> +-(Headlamp)-+---------------------!-(Ground) GH> ! ! GH> 12.0 v ! 220 ohm ! GH> ! 1/4 watt ! I always purchase OEM parts for my repairs If I can, unless the aftermarket has a proven superior product. The old saying of, "You get what you pay for" hold true in most cases. I was doing brakes as a sideline for a while. When using Ford replacement parts, I never had a comeback. The aftermarket changes compounds every time you turn around, looking for a "better and cheaper" (oxymoron?) way to increase the profit margin. If you do use aftermarket brake components, buy a premium line pad from Bendix. They never gave me any grief either. Thanks for sharing your experience! Regards, Craig Klingel ... They're so extremely anal over here, or at least they were. No smogging with one of those chrome open air elements, cause there's no heat riser. Let's see... well, it's just that they don't care if it's running better without all the crap on there, you have to use it anyway. A friend used to have a '77 El Camino with a 350 that had a pretty decent cam. He went to smog it, with all the smog devices installed, and couldn't even get anywhere NEAR passing. I believe the car was even labelled a GROSS POLLUTER. He removed every bit of the smog devices except for the PCV (which anyone should keep anyway) and he passed "clean as a whistle." They don't work.... Luckily, I don't need to worry about that any more. Jason Wedehase strife66@Psynet.net http://www.Psynet.net/strife66 ... No, as long as the resistance of the LED circuit is high enough, the LED should stay off unless the lamp burns out, then the LED would light. The headlight bulb is of sufficiently low resistance that as long as it is working it is effectively "shorting out" the LED. (On some of our Model RR power supplies we put a 6V high current bulb shunted around the fuse, which doesn't light unless the fuse blows, same principal here.) Don ...
