In the meantime - a couple of months ago - I was reading a magazine article about the new Yamaha YZF-R1. It weighs 390 lb & has 150 hp. Facinated by the outrageous power to weight ratio, I called the largest dealer in the area to find out when they expected to get one (the article said there wouldn't be any in this country for awhile). The dealer said they'd already sold all their 98's. I couldn't believe it. He said they'd been allocated 7, based on how many R1000's they'd sold last year, and had deposits on all of them, even though the first ones wouldn't start arriving until May. This put me into a kind of panic mode. I went down to a local Yamaha dealer and found that they - also having been allocated 7 - had two left that I could put a deposit on. I practically threw the money at the guy. This was kind of strange for me, since I had never owned a sportbike before, only cruisers (if you count a Tourglide as a cruiser). But, I had ridden my son's Ninja 500, which is surprisingly comfortable and fun to ride. It's strange to imagine that the new R1 is about the same size as the little Ninja, only with about 100 more horsepower. While the R1 is infinitely more complex than my Harley (for example, 5 valves per cylinder vs 2), previous experience with both Japanese bikes and cars tells me it will, nevertheless, be quite a bit more reliable. With luck, it will be here by June ... --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md - 301-622-2247 (1:109/417.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F2T00018 Date: 02/23/98 From: JASON WEDEHASE Time: 12:28pm \/To: KENNY HENDERSON (Read 0 times) Subj: Formula is hurting Kenny Henderson told the story like this: KH> Basically KH> I think I lost control when the Grand Prix made 'waves' in the water, Just out of curiosity.... were you in your Drag T/As?
