"Full" conversion including electronics and push button backseat/bed on a standard utility van chassis. I had "heavy duty" rotors and pads install the first time they were replaced. No apparent help, the shimmy came back right on schedule. CT> RT> Second problem. Really a question... the disc pad bracket seems to e > RT> loose on the same front right wheel... sometimes. On occasion, it CT> What I don't see is when was the last time you had the wheel bearing >replaced, or the calipers replaced. It's not enough to rebuild the old >calipers Both are factory originals. I'll look into having both replaced when I do the ball joints in the near future. I'm hearing a slight ball joint pop now... did the old crow bar test last weekend... about 1/2 inch up/down movement, so repair time is imminent. CT> I'm wondering if the "loose" pad is a case of improper pad nstall- >ation or the piston may be damaged. Some cars/trucks have outer front brake >pads with "ears" that have to be hammered down over the outside of the >caliper >to insure a correct fit. Failure to do this could lead to a chattering if >the pad is able to move around a lot. Hmmmmm.... a possibility, although it isn't a chatter exactly. Its a "thump, thump". Imagine running over those little square reflectors in the middle of the road... thats what I thought it was the first time I heard it. When I determined that it was coming from the vehicle, I thought, "wheel bearings", but then it went away. It will usually appear after a hard stop like when someone stops in front of you with no warning. The thumping will occur for a couple of stops, then go away until next time. My current theory is that the pad is slipping out of those "ears" temporarily and then mysteriously slipping back in. I'm still not satisfied with the bearings, but I have driven it about 10,000 miles since I first noticed the symptom. It has gotten no better nor worse in that time. CT> Bad wheel bearings could also account for a slight warpage as the >track >of the rotor changes between the pads. The warpage occurred when the vehicle has less than 5,000 miles on it and has reoccurred with every brake job since. I've pretty much resigned myself to living with it. CT> Take the vehicle back to Mr. Goodwrench and have him check the wheel >bearings and the front axles. Its probably cheaper to just pick up a set and replace them myself. At $60/hr with a one hour minimum plus parts, it doesn't take long save some real money doing it myself :). >Here's a list of recalls/TBS's that pertain to >both the 305/350 CID C series vans for 1990.
