Dan can you give me a bit of help on selecting a modem. I see that modems have become very specialized and maybe to difficult to totally understand by the average user. Judging from the amount of traffic going back and forth over the conference a lot of people are pretty confused about all the various types of modems and how to get them to work as they think or thought they were going to work! I still use a 2400 baud internal for working the BBS and have tried it once or twice on the internet. It is obvious that I will need to upgrade soon to something faster, but being of the old school I'm slow to change to something that is not straight forward to set up and that the average person with some technical experience can't figure out. I don't want something that is only software configureable or that runs only with DOS Windows etc. Are there modems out there that fit both worlds, either hardware jumper configurable and which will run with Dos or Windows or any other operating system that you are using? If so who makes them and how do I get information on them. Are there any listing that you know of that list all the various models since 14.4 modems came into existence and give their capabilities? What are the major Manufactures today and which are the most reliable?
