Understood... I was attempting to lighten the mood a bit. I am on the opposite side of this issue, and had plenty of it while in CA. One guy, who just happened to be Oriental, while working at the auto parts store for a day, saw the need to tell me how obsolete pieces of crap Harleys were and how Jap bikes were much better. Seeing as how I owned a HD, that was a great bike and the only vehicle I've ever owned that appreciated, I just took it as another idiot who talks more than learns. Others there criticized my Chevys, and let me know how great they thought their imports were. A few questions most always taught me these people knew little or nothing about cars, but could repeat popular hype. The ones that I knew for a while always had some problem eventually and traded or bought another car. Some went through 2 or 3 import four bangers while I continue to drive mine. Others fixed them and then complained about parts prices... TW> is n osuch thing. EVERY car manufactured or put together here has TW> Foreign content. And Some Japanese makes have MORE red, white , and TW> blue US made parts than some Ford or GM cars. The vast majority of parts on a Chevy, Ford, Olds, etc. are domestic or made by an American owned company. Those red, white, and blue boxes are probably just Asian copies of a Delco parts box. The biggest single issue is where the money is going. Since Japan has continually chosen to play with an unfair advantage and keep their markets closed, I see no reason to help them in their new quest at world domination. TW> Came across this interesting bit on the Automobile page of the paper TW> a couple of days ago; TW> "Toyota not only set a US sales record last year, it set a North TW> American Production record also. They produced 838,069 Toyotas in TW> their three plants. During what time frame? For 1997 I show Toyota assembled 593,932 cars here (of some domestic parts but mostly foreign main components), and they imported another 228,650. This is cars only, not trucks, or SUVs which all come from Japan except the Tacoma p/u. Read the trade journals like 'Automotive News' which publishes all production figures rather than selected and misleading highlights. TW> The breakdown is: Kentucky, 432,146; California, 296,971; TW> Canada, 108,952. MORE then 60 percent of the 1.23 million TW> Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold here were built in North America. No Lexus models are assembled here; they are All Japanese. You're slipping again... Some Toyota models had 'Final Assembly' in NA. Don't forget that they are experts at supplying the minimum amount of NA content and most of it from companies owned by them. We gave them a free hand to open whatever business they like, while they don't allow us any such consideration. What they need to do is stop importation until some balance of trade is established. Since we helped them regain their economy after WWII, and even made great efforts to balance trade to their advantage, they can now return the favor and put a large percentage of their profits from us, towards incentives to make US automakers factories there. There are many other political and legal issues which I won't discuss here, that can be done to show they are willing to not only play fair, but at least operate in an ethical and legal manner. At present it takes some digging to find out how often Illegal and unethical conduct is swept under the table (and out of the courts) by lobbyists, bribes, and other amoral conduct. Many Japanese Companies have been found to have illegal practices. Recent examples are Honda, who accepted bribes from dealers, and Mitsubishi who were making illegal payoffs to `sokaiya' corporate racketeers in Japan. This was legal in Japan until 1983, and it is just now being reported that more than a dozen major Japanese companies have been found to have links with racketeers. ... Mitsubishi Motors unveils top management reshuffle TOKYO, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp (7211.T), embroiled in a racketeer payoff scandal, unveiled a top management reshuffle on Tuesday which will take effect later this month. The firm said in a statement that it would appoint senior managing director Katsuhiko Kawasoe as president at a regular board meeting to be held on November 27. Current president Takemune Kimura will become chairman while chairman Hirokazu Nakamura, who was president of the company from 1989 to 1995, will resign from his post and become a company adviser. Last month, police arrested several executives of Mitsubishi Motors, Japan's fourth-biggest carmaker and the first manufacturer to be implicated in a widening scandal, on suspicion of making illegal payoffs to "Sokaiya" corporate racketeers since 1995. Since the revelation of the scandal, Mitsubishi Motors has stopped its media advertising, including that in newspapers and on radio and television, and will continue the suspension until the end of November. Sokaiya racketeers extort money from firms by threatening to expose dubious business practices or disrupt shareholders' meetings but are sometimes used by firms to discourage bone fide questions at such meetings.
