The Rolex 24 At Daytona - One of the World's Premier Motorsports Events DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Rolex 24 At Daytona, one of the premier motorsports events in the world, offers diversity like no other event. From the international contingent of drivers to the varying classes of race machines, the unique course layout and the ever-changing elements, the Rolex 24 At Daytona has it all. One of only two 24-hour endurance races in the world, the Rolex 24 At Daytona is the kickoff each year to Daytona's famous Speedweeks - 18 days of motorsports action featuring a wide variety of race cars. The twice around-the-clock endurance test, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 1998, enjoys a colorful heritage. Since 1962, drivers from every corner of the globe have come to Daytona to challenge themselves against the rigors of a 24 hr. endurance race while competing against the best drivers in the world. Over the last 35 years, domestic competitors have excelled on this international stage. Some of the greatest American race car drivers in history have sipped champagne in Daytona's Victory Lane including Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Dan Gurney and Hurley Haywood. Haywood is the 24 hour at Daytona's all-time record holder with five overall wins. In 1997, the Oldsmobile R&S Mark 3 team of Rob Dyson, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Butch Leitzinger, Andy Wallace, John Paul Jr., John Schneider and James Weaver outlasted the field in the second closest finish in Rolex 24 At Daytona history. After a grueling 24 hours, consisting of 690 laps and 2,456.4 miles, the Dyson team beat the second-place finishers by just over two minutes. One of the most popular aspects among race fans attending the Rolex 24 At Daytona is the exotic look of the race cars and the awesome speeds they attain. The Rolex 24 At Daytona field consists of four basic classes: Can-Am, GT-1, GT-2 and GT-3. These four classes provide an exciting and colorful mix, with high powered Can-Am cars achieving speeds in excess of 200 mph navigating around slower GT-1, GT-2 and GT-3 cars which are simultaneously vying for position in their respective divisions. Although slower, the GT machines are by no means pushovers, these machines are high-tech race cars capable of speeds in excess of 190 mph. 1998 Rolex 24 At Daytona tickets start at just 63 cents an hour, based on a $15 advance two-day grandstand ticket. Advance Rolex 24 tickets offer significant savings over daily gate admissions and are available by calling the Daytona International Speedway Ticket Office at (904) 253-7223. --- Blue Wave/386 v2.20 [NR] * Origin: River Canyon Rd. They include a 5.7 Liter LT1 engine (285HP), with reported CHP testing top speeds (Two officers, patrol equipment installed) of 147 MPH. The "law enforcement" computer chip raises the top speed of the Caprice to this level. Also, CHP currently has Suburbans, two-door Tahoes, both in b/w and white in use. They are primarily used for safety inspections and inclement weather. Also, CHP uses aircraft extensively in each patrol area. Fixed wing and helicopters clock motorists using timing methods, with round up units waiting up to ten miles down the road. CHP is investigating use of in-car MDTs (mobile display terminals) to relay information between the field and mobile units. When a car is now pulled over, the plate is typed into the MDT. The new Cal Drivers License has a magnetic strip, allowing the officer to scan it in the MDT and get more expedient results. This will reduce radio traffic substantially, and give us scanner listeners a lot more dead time. The CHP also have some BIG Blazers used in the Grapevine area for enforcement, as well as some pickup trucks (black with white doors and a white camper shell) which are used for enforcement in the Carson area. TEXAS Dallas, TX...White Caprices & Crown Vics, w/ blue stripe all the way around the car and huge numbers on the trunk deck lids. Some w/visa- bars, some without. Traffic also uses unmarked sedans w/ strobe lights in the deck and grills...mostly older style Caprices and Crown Vics. Ft Worth, TX...White Caprices and Crown Vics w/ "Fort Worth Police" on the doors. Also, white Mustangs. All have light bars. Grand Prairie, Arlington...Both cities patrol their sections of I-20 and I-30 heavily. Grand Prairie used a few Mustangs and One Camaro, plus several Caprices. Cities Around the D/FW Metroplex...variety of cars including Camaros and Mustangs. Pay close attention to the following cities: Garland (Camaros and Mustangs w/ lightbars on IH-635); Hutchins (Crown Vics on IH-20 and IH45); Ferris (Old Mustangs w/ no lightbars on IH-45); Wilmer (Sedans on IH-45); Lavon (Crown Vics w/lightbars - have been known to write for 1mph over); Balch Springs (Blue and White Mustang & Crown Vics on IH-635 and IH-20) NOTE!!! Dallas & FWPD motorcycle officers have laser! So does Garland! BEWARE: On the Dallas North Tollway in Dallas, TX. This tollway is patrolled by TX DPS Troopers in Mustangs, Camaros, and Caprices. They show little mercy and use moving radar as well as stationary laser. DPS Mustangs may or may not have light bars, but all the Camaros DO have light bars. I've noticed that the newer cars only have the light on the dash because Texas is so BIG there are all kinds of older looking sedans which happen to be unmarked. Colors seen: blue, maroon, white. Houston dark blue Mustangs with gold stripes on I-10 they usually follow you for a couple of minutes --meanwhile you are unaware then they get directly behind you and flash their lights. Dallas/Ft.Worth, same as above but I-20 usually doesn't have many cops. --- Blue Wave/386 v2.20 [NR] * Origin: River Canyon Rd.
