AM>> DOHC 4 valve setups are great for high RPM applications, like AM>> racing, but on the street a V8 doesn't need to turn more than AM>> 6,000 RPM. All that cost and complexity is wasted when you can AM>> make similar power for less money, and it is more efficient to AM>> run. MG>> What makes you think a DOHC V8 engine is not as efficient as a MG>> low tech V8? AM> At lower RPM, like daily driving, you don't need twice as many valves AM> and all their related parts moving, causing friction. It's not that you need it. But with twice as much valves the cylinder charge can be made much more homogene which saves fuel. AM> In this case the ZR-1 engine and the new C5 engine are almost AM> identical in size. The 4 valve ZR-1 doesn't quite get the mileage of AM> the 2 valve engine, even though Lotus gave it some trick manifold AM> butterflies to keep velocity high. Without variable camshafts, 4 valve engines tend to be either fine at low or at high speeds - depends on what they are optimised for. Really versatile it gets with variable camshafts... AM> Obviously, this may not always be true, but in the case of the small AM> Honda getting the same highway mileage as the much larger Caprice AM> (which had a V8 over twice the size), it was. A high winding 2 liter AM> getting similar mileage to a 5 liter V8, even though the Caprice must AM> punch a much larger hole in the air, indicates some kind of AM> efficiency... doesn't it? Sure. ALthough, like said in other mails, I have problems to believe. Maybe in very special conditions at low highway speeds, but not in daily driving. MG>> Hey, I didn't say it is as fast as an F-body. I just said it is MG>> fast enough to overtake everything slower than me on country MG>> roads. My usual speed on straight country roads is about 70 to 80 MG>> mph. Bends are slower, normally about 10 mph slower than the MG>> car's and tire's limit. AM> I was impressed by the Audi A4 turbo with a 1.8 liter, when I was in AM> the UK for a bit. Not exactly an engine that impresses my. It goes well, right, but it's using quite a lot of fuel. I think somebody at the R&D department get's excited of 5-valve cars, but I don't think there's a difference to 4-valves... AM> Everywhere we went my chauffeur drove briskly, and was quite AM> efficient in turns. Hey, you want to get there, and the faster you go, the earlier you're there AM> Those roundabouts, at speed, the first day I was AM> there, were quite the sight from my vantage point in the left-front AM> where just the day before I had a steering wheel and brakes! That's a point... I was in Scotland last year with my own car, and it proved to be quite difficult to drive to the wron side of the road. :) AM> I could tell it was a different ball game with cars entirely. After AM> a couple weeks getting used to driving on the left side of the road AM> and sitting on opposite sides, it felt strange to drive my car home AM> from the airport. I avoided the temptation to drive 70-80 on roads AM> similar to the UK, but which had signs posted about 45 MPH. I guess AM> a big difference is the amount of traffic around town here. Even if AM> you hit 80 somebody would pull out in front of you before you got AM> far. Sure, fast driving is only posible with low traffic, especially on country roads. cu .\\arc ... MG>> You still have the RX-7? Never been a real success here, imports MG>> have been discontinued a year ago. I always liked that car MG>> though... AM> They have been discontinued here also, along with Nissan 300 ZX's. Both sold quite bad here... I don't remember having seen a 300ZX in real fe. MG>>> NASCAR are those huge street car lookalikes, right? MG>> I read an article about them in last week's ams (a german car MG>> magazine). Quite interesting, but not up to date from the MG>> technical point of view. AM> They still have to run tiny restrictor plates to keep the speeds down AM> though. The stock body shapes tend to become airborne above 210 MPH, AM> especially if you overcook a turn and spin. I once saw Richard Petty AM> turn sideways on a high banked oval (years ago before restrictor AM> plates) and when it got sideways it became a wing, lifting the car AM> 15-20 feet into the air. Uh-oh. Not exactly what I'd like to have from a real race car... MG>>> Did anybody on these machines experiment with 4 or more driven MG>>> wheels instead of two? AM>> Yes, in the 60's they experimented with this but weight transfer AM>> unloads the front wheels and they just put smoke in your vision. MG>> Mmmmh... AWD in street cars is balanced the way all four wheels MG>> spin at the same time. AM> This was tried different ways, but some had multiple engines turning AM> their own axle, or even their own wheel! Now that's impossible. AM> It was later found that a single engine, running nitromethane, could AM> develop more power than was being controlled at the time. Multiple AM> disc clutches with a varying lockup is solving those problems. It's just that I'm always impressed by an Audi Quattro's behaviour at starting: while other potent cars spin their wheels or struggle with their spin control, the Quattro just squeaks for a moment, lifts in its suspension and off it goes... I'm not a Quattro freak, but that's impressive. AM>> There has been a split in IndyCar Racing as of 1997. One still AM>> runs small turbocharged V8's that wind past 12,000 RPM and cost a AM>> fortune to keep abreast of the competition. The other runs AM>> normally aspirated V8's with a 4 liter limit and a 10,500 RPM AM>> ceiling, which keeps the cost down. MG>> A ha. In the same races? AM> No, different sanctioning bodies. The folks at Indianapolis used to AM> let the other (CART) race at its track. They caused a rift and AM> developed the Indy Racing League (IRL) so the CART folks took most of AM> the known drivers and race at a different track on the same day the AM> Indy 500 is run. This was somewhat unbelievable as the Indy 500 was AM> considered the ultimate race of its type in the US. Yes, I remember... that IRL was initiated by the Indianapolis track owner, right? And one of the points was to make indy car racing more american again, as CART drove in many countries and has a couple of foreign drivers. We don't get IRL here, only CART. Bu I remember the Indy 500 not being sold out last year, right? Seems those CART's are doing better... I hope for a CART race in the next years here in europe... Formula 1 tends to become boring (no slicks anymore, races decided at the FIA courts etc) and some competition could do well... MG>> BTW: normally aspirated formula 1 engines hit the 17000 mark last MG>> season... AM> Swat those bees, eh? I have heard the 12,000+ RPM of the IndyCars... AM> It's up there. :-) I believe I read that many in F1 are using AM> pneumatic valves nowadays? Is that also used in any of their AM> production vehicles?? AFAIK all F1 engines have pneumatic valves. But I don't know of a single road car with them. To compare racing at such a high level with road car isn't realistic anyway... cu .\\arc ...
