Thinking that 3300 lbs. was 400 lbs lighter than the supercharged version they had, I decided to run some numbers with the stock drivetrain, but hopped up internally to about 445 HP. This seems feasible without resorting to supercharging, and would be a much better all-around vehicle. --- Blue Wave/386 v2.20 [NR] * Origin: River Canyon Rd. JZ> Its been a long while, but if I remember correctly there should JZ> either be a thermostatic spring or vacuum valve operated little heat JZ> valve at the tail end of the passenger side exhaust manifold. Yes, it is there, and wired open. I'll explain... This was connected to a vacuum operated device that opened it as the water temp allowed the vacuum through. This was called EFE (Early Fuel Evaporation) and being old and worn was quite noisy for the few moments it was opening. After putting on the Edelbrock Performer manifold, it was useless as no heat crossover is there... Aluminum conducts heat faster than iron. JZ> If that Performer is a single plane "tunnel ram" type intake you are JZ> definately not going to like it in the wintertime. It's a square-bore 600 CFM, which is smaller than the Quadra-jet. It is a medium performance setup, and didn't need 750 CFM as it is setup for torque, between 1500 and 5500 RPM. I've been happy with the Holley setup but understand what you say about all the mismatched aftermarket parts that often find their way onto street cars. It was a Rochester 2V with a maze of vacuum tubing, pumps, valves, etc. Amazing how much it 'cleaned-up' when the whole carb, manifold, EGR, air-pump, and assorted hoses were removed intact and stored in my garage. Tunnel rams are for 8000+ RPM drag race engines and for looking good in a museum. ;-) With a properly adjusted choke, it runs quite good in our reasonably mild winters. But also the good ones, (in this case powerful with good handling and acceleration) will sell either place if they don't have a reputation for poor construction. I hope the large improvements in the engineering of the C5 are a signal that it is intended as a world-class vehicle, even if sales are moderate. BTW, it is exceeding sales expectations, which is part of the reason for the limiting the magnesium wheels to export, as was originally intended. It has gotten too expensive to chance litigation for errors in the US where everybody has a lawyer on 'speed-dial'! And the millions that are paid out for past blunders gets paid by consumers. MG> Besides it's not only the price of the car, it's also the running MG> costs. From what I can read here, a V8 is not really expensive to MG> run over there? Well, here it is. Premium gas (93 Octane R+M/2) is going for about $1.23 per gallon right now in this part of the US. It may be $1.60 or more in other states. My other car, also a V8, runs on regular gas which is about $1.07 a gallon (28 cents per liter?). I live in town and typically drive less than 150 miles a week, so $5 or $6 covers it. AM> fuel required to maintain highway speed on a high-torque V8 with AM> proper gearing, may be less than the complex multi-valve small AM> displacement engine that runs much more rpm. MG> This probably only goes for quite low highway speeds. I'd like to know MG> how much such an engine drinks at highway speeds of 80 or 100 mph. 100 MPH here, for any length of time, would get you a trip to free room and board... and your car impounded. But, with stock gearing and the six-speed tranny, 1650 to 2050 RPM would be 80 and 100 MPH, respectively. (The C5 has a .50 overdrive sixth gear) Guesstimating 25 to 30 miles per gallon at these speeds, which are barely into the torque band for 6th gear. This is based on 27 MPG for my Camaro turning similar RPM, even though it's not as aerodynamically efficient. --- Blue Wave/386 v2.20 [NR] * Origin: River Canyon Rd. BBS Chattanooga, Tn (1:362/627)
