GH> BCU Body Control Unit The best way to explain it is Chrysler vehicles built after mid 1988 are rolling networks. There are 4 main systems all processors and all interlinled with each other. The four modules or computers are: The SMEC Single Module Engine Controller: The SMEC controlls Fuel delivery, Ignition, charging system, and self diagnosis. The TCM Transmission Control Module The TCM shifts the trannie and controll torgue converter lockup The IPCM Insterment Panel Control Module Makes the guages warning lights ect work The BCM Body Control Module Now this little baby does a lot of stupid stuff it controll everything from interior lights to the wipers door locks factory alarm system this thing knows everything. Now for the Chrysler brainstorm Why not link or network all the processors with a serial link. So what they did was set the things up so if one part of a module fails it can borrow from a less important system. eg if the TCU fails it will use the IPCU to shift the transmission and kill the guages. On the factory alarm system the BCU uses a key off/door lock command to set the alarm. I hope this bit of info helps it's second nature to me so if I fail to make it clear enough just ask. The 3000 V6 were sold all over Europe, I've a friend nearby who drives one. (Bright orange, huge whale-tail and complete body kit. Yuck!) It's a bit of a handful in the wet, but Capris always were (even my 1600 gets a bit twitchy at times). However, the chassis is very forgiving and easy to control. The 4 cylinder engine is a nice piece of work, though avoid the MK III standard carb - I've had tons of problems with it (auto choke sticking ON and OFF, throttle linkage sticking, eating throttle cables, low MPG's) but I've now replaced it with a Webber carb and modified inlet manifold, which makes a huge difference. On thing the Capri isn't particularly fond of is water - even heavy road spray can get onto the HT leads and it starts a-spluttering. Are you sure Lotus did a Capri version? They did do a Cortina conversion which was hugely successful in 70's rallying. There are a lot of mis- badged lotus cortinas around, most are simply retuned Ford lumps.
