They are meant to hold a vehicle while parked. They are meant to assist in stopping a vehicle if all else has failed. Government safety checks require that they be able to do BOTH. You know, I come from what's called "the old school", while driving or riding a bike, I don't believe in relying on brakes in any fashion. I even have an old flat track racing bike which cannot be ridden on the street because it HAS NO BRAKES. But let's drop this "What I'd do if this happens", let's discuss a real world fiasco. Have you ever had a complete brake failure in an auto, which is kinda hard to have with the dual master cylinders in use for the last 30 years? And if you've had such a failure, what was your experience? Did you find something convienent to crash into while completely ignoring your "parking brake"? What would you do if you were approaching a crossing guard, holding a stop sign and assisting school children across an intersection, and your brake pedal went to the floor and NOTHING!?? Mind you, I only mean going about 20 mph (27kmph) in an old American station wagon (about 4500 lbs or 2045kg.). That did happen to me, and the emergency brake did help me stop it, without loss of life, limb and no property damage. It did it's job, as both designed and required to. And this is the last I have to say on this "beat to death" topic. --- * Origin: The Right Place, Fort Lee, NJ USA(201)947-8231 (1:2604/539.11) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F1500016 Date: 01/04/98 From: BILL MITCHELL Time: 09:44am \/To: GARY SPRINZL (Read 0 times) Subj: Oil pump? In fact, I'd use a 15W-40, or 20W-50 which are usually approved for either heavy diesel use or 4 stroke air cooled motorcycle use while 10W-40 is considered NG for either, The reason is that the VI used in the 10W40 makes it very suceptible to breakdown, and some of the other two oils don't even use what would normally be called a VI. --- * Origin: The Right Place, Fort Lee, NJ USA(201)947-8231 (1:2604/539.11) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: F1500017 Date: 01/04/98 From: JEREMY LOWREY Time: 6:42am \/To: ROY WITT (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Transmission? ..
