Right..the latter being the current method.. RW>> Then, about that same time, the govt said you (factories again) RW>> gotta stop polluting the air with those cars. Smog devices RW>> were bountiful beginning in 74 and by 75, horsepower was gone... RJT> RJT> I've looked at that side of it, and the major difference I can see RJT> is that there's an EGR valve on the newer one, and some RJT> vacuum-operated stuff that only comes into play as the engine's RJT> warming up -- a temp-controlled valve on the radiator top tank and RJT> another one on the intake manifold, coupled to two or three other RJT> gizmos, and running the EGR valve as far as I can see. The rest of RJT> it was the same. Lucky you. Chevy fans have to put up with Air injection pumping systems. (Pumps air into the exhaust manifold, directly at the exhaust port in the head.) RJT> Is there stuff I can do to reverse that? You can eliminate the EGR by going to an earlier manifold or an aftermarket manifold without the EGR. Since I'm really not a Mopar fan, I'm limited in my knowlege here. But, you can just about eliminate anything you want, as long as your state smog laws allow it. RJT> Or would I be better off just getting another engine and building RJT> it up from scratch? Getting an earlier engine might be the way to go if you want to eliminate the smog goodies. Or, go the other route, buy a 318 (5.2L), o'drive transmission and the computer w/harness from a wrecked Dakota...you'll get more HP and fuel economy. I hear that the Dakota is a fast truck... RW>> Basically, your engine lost compression and some cam lobe. Put RW>> it back with aftermarket stuff and it'll make horsepower again. RJT> RJT> What would I need to do here? I've been thinking about a cam, RJT> since I'll be putting that engine into a truck anyhow, and want RJT> different performance than what it had, but don't know enough about RJT> it yet to decide *which* cam I oughta go with. I hear that there's RJT> one that's optimized for towing/RV use, think that might be the RJT> ticket? If that's the use you intend for the truck. That towing/rv cam will give you lots of low-end torque for moving the vehicle(s). Usually in the idle to 3000rpm range. RJT> I dunno about compression, you may be right in that the RJT> compression ratios of these two engines were different, but I RJT> don't recall the spec offhand. (Grabbing handy Chilton book...) I RJT> see where the 318 went from 9.2 in '68 to 8.8 in '70 down to 8.5 RJT> (!) in '75. Jeez. So what do you do to fix this? You can use that 9.2 head in today's world. You might even get away with shaving them a little to raise them to 9.5, but not anything more than that with the gasoline we have today. Without a computer to control the knock/pinging, you're between a rock and a hard place with anything higher. Unless you want to buy premium racing gas? RJT> Oh, and there's stuff here about the horsepower, too: RJT> "Beginning in 1972, horsepower and torque are _net_ figures. They RJT> are measured at the rear of the transmission with all accessories RJT> installed and operating." Hmm. I know that with that '70 I had RJT> manual steering and brakes, no A/C, no power 'nuthin' and got top RJT> mileage of 18-20 on the highway, while with the '75 it had power RJT> steering and brakes plus a/c (that didn't work) and I never did RJT> better than about 16 with that one. Try finding an overdrive transmission. Mopar must make one for the 318 (5.2L) in their Dakota and Jeeps. ... (measure the TH350 and the 700R4 and shorten the drive shaft accordingly.) I think it was around 1 3/4 inches, but it's been a few years. Move the transmission cross-member back to accomodate the 700R4 mount. Drill (I use a torch) new holes to bolt the crossmember in place. Figure a way to lockup/unlock the Torque Converter. I used some factory parts that they used in the early years of the 700R4 for locking and unlocking the converter. Basically, they used a vacuum switch to lock the converter and a brake light switch with dual switches to unlock it, the other switch was used for the brake lights, naturally. One final problem which is the most important item in the conversion. The TH350 uses a (called a TV) cable to actuate the valve body into shifting/downshifting from throttle response. The 700R4 doesn't use the cable in the same sense and needs to be carefully adjusted, or you'll lose the tranny in short order... You can use the factory manual to get the adjustment info, or wait until I consult my installation memos (they're at the shop)...I can also give you part numbers if you want to go with the vacuum switches.. ...
