Another method that was used was with an JE>offset key in the cam gear to camshaft. Was shown a simple trick years ago in a little 307 Chevy when we replaced the timing chain that was getting old and slacky. When he put the cam gear on he first redid the retarded keyway slot a tad to fit the gear on backwards, so instead of the cam timing being retarded a few degrees it was advanced a few instead. After normal chain "stretch in" the cam timing ends up right about dead on top. Really made a seat of the pants difference in how that lil' 307 tended to act afterwards...! Same old cam, same old everything two barrel bone stock toy, just a needed new timing chain with the retarded gear keyway reversed. A very real low dollar difference for sure! Where does the rotor ML> get its excitation at 2000 rpm as you stated in the last paragraph? ML> Is it from some residual magnetism in the magnetic material or is it ML> from reverse leakage from the battery through the diodes? G'day Mark, according to a "Bosch" service/repair manual, the rotor retains sufficient residual magnetism to cause it to self excite. Generally alternator diodes are rated at around 200V PIV, the leakage current at around 12 volts, even for 3 power output diodes in parallel, (9 diode alternator) would be insignificant and would contribute very little to any residual magnetic field in the rotor. I have some 1N4719(R) (alternator diodes rated at around 25A) which measure a leakage current of less than 0.03 micro-amp at 100 volt reverse biased. As an example, my Ford S/Wagon has a 55A Bosch alternator, with the warning light circuit disconnected, it kicks in at around 1400 to 1500 rpm (engine speed) after starting. If the warning light is reconnected the alternator starts charging immediately engine revs exceed 600 rpm. There are alternators out now (within the last 12 months or so) that have more than 9 diodes, some have 12 diodes, but to the best of my knowledge they are still only 3 phase WYE (star connected). However, they do produce around 25% more output current for the same physical package as before and at lower rotational speeds. This RJ> was from a guy who should be hanging out in here, he's got the RJ> know-how in detail... ML> Star windings? Aren't they six phase, i.e., 60 degrees sequential? G'day Mark, Star windings or delta windings are (usually) 3 phase. Star windings give the advantage of dual voltage, although not normally a benefit in automotive alternators (some early regulators did use the star point as a return point rather than ground). By changing the winding configuration from star to delta additional output current can be obtained, approx 1.73 (root 3) times that of a star configuration. Bosch manufactured such types, model U2 rated 320 Amps Star mode and 550 Amps delta mode, same unit.
