I AM> have not tried this in a long time, as it could not be push started AM> with an automatic anyway. As you say Alan, if it's an automatic it's all academic. However most automotive alternators have sufficient residual magnetic flux (remanence) in the rotor to cause it to "self excite" without using the extra current via the "warning light" circuit. The addition of the warning light current (and sometimes a 3W to 5W resistor in a parallel with it) increases the rotors' magnetic flux so that the alternator produces useable output when the engine speed reaches around 500 to 600 rpm. Otherwise you need to rev the engine to around 1500 rpm before the alternator achieves sufficient internal voltage to "self excite" and produce useable output. I do know that it DOES when it comes to heavy trucks in excess of 26,000 lbs. GVW on their snap throttle diesel exhaust test, but that's a completely different animal. I do know that you can be ticketed if you don't have whatever current sticker your home state requires, and up to now they couldn't enforce NJ inspection on an out of state vehicle. I really doubt that's changed. They CAN require proof of insurance, though, even if the home state does not. Been there, Done that. Across the Hudson from here in Manhattan, though, they ticket parked out of state vehicles that do not have a current inspection sticker. And in most of Manhattan, the criteria to get towed is simply having been ticketed. So, if you aren't current on your stickers, stay out of Manhattan.
