Can anybody explain to me just what exactly it was that RJT>RW> RJT> they did to change the engine and lose all those horses? RJT>RW>Long about 71 or 72 they (factories) changed the way they rated engine RJT>RW>horse RJT>RW>r. (I forget the old and new formulas they used) That helped those folk RJT>RW>wh RJT>RW>id license fees by horsepower. Illinois was one of them. Or would I be better of RJT>RW> RJT> just getting another engine and building it up from scratch? RJT>RW> Basically, your engine lost compression and some cam lobe. Put it ack RJT>RW> with RJT>RW>ermarket stuff and it'll make horsepower again. RJT> JE> The biggest (worst) things the manufacturers did back in the RJT> JE> 70s was reduce the compression ratio AND retard the cam RJT> JE> timing about 5-7 degrees. Same cam grind, just differect RJT> JE> timing. I am speaking strictly of Ford 460 V8s here. I would RJT> JE> suspect others were similar. Supposed to reduce emissions RJT> JE> and ended up doing nothing but reduce power. I corrected RJT> JE> that by using a police cam which kept the better timing. RJT>So if I advance the timing to just this side of ping, I oughta be able o RJT>ome more power out of it? Or are you saying that I'd also need a different RJT>for it, too? Roy, it depends upon exactly what you are talking about. For example, to try to "reduce emissions" Ford and most others, detuned their engines in the later 70s by retarding the cam timing (by placing the cam drive gear in a retarded position on the camshaft)- read that "valve timing". Naturally this retarded the ignition timing, since the dist. is driven off the camshaft. Yes, to a very limited degree, you could derive some small benefit from advancing the distributer timing, but until you actually advanced the cam timing also the benefit was very little. Ford did NOT detune their 460s used in police vehicles so the best solution was to replace the cam with a police cam. This restored the original advanced cam (valve timing) AND distributer timing with a rather healthy power increase. Another method that was used was with an offset key in the cam gear to camshaft. I've seen some cars that will move a little, in reverse, but only with drum brakes on the rear. With 4 wheel disc, the vehicle won't move either way, again, if adjusted correctly. One of my vehicles has 4 wheel disc, and when the parking (emerg) brake is activated, it won't move at all. To be honest, a lot of drum parking brakes aren't adjusted correctly, even though they SHOULD automatically adjust themselves when we back up. Sometimes that works and sometimes not. Ronnie in NC ... I already commented on the thermal gradient issue, but I thought I'd make another comment. If more heat is desired, then it could be produced with just 12 volts. Simply reduce the resistance of the "defrost grids." This could be done by adding more conductive paths in parallel. In other words, if P=V*V/R, then reduce the value of R to increase the power. Of course that also increases the current. --- QScan/PCB v1.19b / 01-0232 * Origin: IBMNet Connection - Indpls, IN - 317-882-5575 28.8 USR (1:231/1)
