Tellason said this about Engine RW> Wanted to John Faerber. RJT> Here's a question, maybe some folks can clarify this for me RJT> -- if you look in a bunch of the books that you can get on these RJT> cars (Chilton, Motors Manual, etc.) at engine specs, the '70 Dart RJT> I had was rated at 230 HP for that engine, while the '75 was rated RJT> at 170 HP! Can anybody explain to me just what exactly it was that RJT> they did to change the engine and lose all those horses? RW> Long about 71 or 72 they (factories) changed the way they rated RW> engine horsepower. (I forget the old and new formulas they RW> used) That helped those folks who paid license fees by RW> horsepower. Illinois was one of them. Ok, I remember hearing something about that, one rating was just the engine and the other was the engine with a full load of accessories, or something like that? RW> Then, about that same time, the govt said you (factories again) RW> gotta stop polluting the air with those cars. Smog devices RW> were bountiful beginning in 74 and by 75, horsepower was gone... I've looked at that side of it, and the major difference I can see is that there's an EGR valve on the newer one, and some vacuum-operated stuff that only comes into play as the engine's warming up -- a temp-controlled valve on the radiator top tank and another one on the intake manifold, coupled to two or three other gizmos, and running the EGR valve as far as I can see. The rest of it was the same. RJT> Is there stuff I can do to reverse that? Or would I be better off RJT> just getting another engine and building it up from scratch? RW> Basically, your engine lost compression and some cam lobe. Put RW> it back with aftermarket stuff and it'll make horsepower again. What would I need to do here? I've been thinking about a cam, since I'll be putting that engine into a truck anyhow, and want different performance than what it had, but don't know enough about it yet to decide *which* cam I oughta go with. I hear that there's one that's optimized for towing/RV use, think that might be the ticket? I dunno about compression, you may be right in that the compression ratios of these two engines were different, but I don't recall the spec offhand. (Grabbing handy Chilton book...) I see where the 318 went from 9.2 in '68 to 8.8 in '70 down to 8.5 (!) in '75. Jeez. So what do you do to fix this? Oh, and there's stuff here about the horsepower, too: "Beginning in 1972, horsepower and torque are _net_ figures. They are measured at the rear of the transmission with all accessories installed and operating." Hmm. I know that with that '70 I had manual steering and brakes, no A/C, no power 'nuthin' and got top mileage of 18-20 on the highway, while with the '75 it had power steering and brakes plus a/c (that didn't work) and I never did better than about 16 with that one. RW> Some manufacturers used DISHED pistons, some used flat-tops RW> with bigger combustion chambers. You can replace dished RW> pistons with flat-tops or you can use earlier heads if Mopar RW> decided to use bigger combustion chambers instead of dished RW> pistons... The more I look at this project the more involved it gets (and ain't that always the way it works? :-), I'm alread looking at taking the oil pan off because the one from the car won't work in the truck (it'll sit on the cross-member), the truck version holds another quart and has a deeper sump, which means changing the pickup tube and the dipstick and tube. Now I'm looking at taking off the top end too? I don't remember what these heads came off (got 'em off my brother, I'll ask him), but they're not the original, those got toasted when the timing gear went. email: roy.j.tellason%tanstaaf@frackit.com --- * Origin: TANSTAAFL BBS 717-432-0764 (1:270/615) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: EGZ00008 Date: 12/29/97 From: ROY J. First, I had to remove all heater/AC ducting from below the dash, both driver's and passenger's sides. Then, I had to remove the glovebox. After that was done, I had to remove a few vacuum lines, and then the op cables (thank God for vacuum line schematics and Mitchell's manuals! ). Now came time to remove the heater box from below the dash. Alrighty.. 5 bolts through the firewall and it comes off.. except .. one of those bolts was accessible only from under the hood, and it was behind the container holding the evap coil for the AC. So, off comes the evap coil housing. Except .. one of those bolts holding IT on was on the bottom below the coil itself, and behind the inner fender. Guess what? Off comes the hood and passenger-side fender. Now, that bolt is reachable.. and for the record.. there is now a hole bored into the inner fender well to facilitate future bolt removal without removing the hood and fender . Now, the heater box comes out, the old core comes out, the new one in, and reverse the above.. |10 o ________ |04Gary / Black Lightning -- Silicon Speedway BBS |10 /L|\______/| |07ITC * Crossover * Infinet * Q-Net * BlueNet * Fido |10>> |________| |01Always Pushing The Envelope * |09enforcer@inficad.com --- GEcho 1.20/Pro * Origin: Dale Earnhardt: Looking for 8 in 1998!+6024649676 (1:114/511) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: EGZ00013 Date: 12/29/97 From: GARY SPRINZL Time: 02:29am \/To: SEAN DUNBAR (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Oil pump? |01When confronted with |09C.A.
