WELCH (Read 0 times) Subj: Batteries -> I thought antimony was originally added to the lead to make it stiff, -> just as calcium is now sometimes used instead. That is basically correct. BUT the reason to stiffen the plates was to prevent flaking off of the Active material in their Discharged state when they were particularly soft and the active material literally fell off the plates. Antimony is Far better but contributes greatly to Full Charge gassing and water loss. The Calicum was substituted in battery applications NOT requiring Deep Discharges because it retarded Gassing and the associated Water loss. Thus Maintenance batteries. BUT it is not nearly as good as Antimony in helping with "Flaking" of active material in Deep Discharged conditions. Thus Lead Antimony plates are typically used in Golf Cart and House batteries for RV's or Trolling motors etc and Calcium Lead plates in Automobile applications. --- GEcho 1.20/Pro * Origin: Jim's East County BBS! On some Alternators the Regulator is internally connected to the Battery terminal of the Alternator instead of going through the Ignition switch. There are popularly known as One Terminal Alternators because they don't have the separate Field connection plug. But technically it is NOT Self Excitation as the real Excitation comes from the Battery through the Battery terminal on the Alternator. IF the Battery is Totally Dead the alternator will not charge. That is IF you somehow provide power to the Starter to start the engine without jumping the Battery. :-) :-) --- GEcho 1.20/Pro * Origin: Jim's East County BBS! El Cajon, CA. Sounds to me like the EPS system, now standard on the A-Class Mercedes after it failed that test. In fact here in europe all major companies are checking if they should put it as option or standard feature on their cars, now that a relatively cheap car has it as standard feature. cu .\\arc ...Cooking Rule: if at first you don't succeed, order pizza. --- Yuppie! v2.12 * Origin: sympathy for the debil (2:270/47.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: EGT00017 Date: 12/22/97 From: SEAN DUNBAR Time: 05:21pm \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Oil pump? Worried about my oil pump... a couple of days ago, it started taking quite awhile to build up any pressure whatsoever when it's been parked over night; so long, in fact, that the lifters start rattling for a couple of seconds. The oil pressure also seems quite low when it's cold compared to how it used to be. It took almost 10 seconds this morning for the oil pressure guage to show any movement. Oddly, when the engine is warmed up fully, the pressure is a bit higher than it used to be; it seems like it's always around 60 PSI anytime it's above 1500 RPM. I did switch oil brands recently.... could that have anything to do with it? I'm just buying the cheapest 40 weight oil I can find (SA rated... I figure it leaks out so fast that the additives aren't going to do a bit of good) --- Telegard v3.09.g1/mL * Origin: tos * 972-818-0339 - dallas texas (1:124/6630)
