AM> -=>> Quoting Mark Logsdon to Alan Morrison <=- AM> AM>> Chevy hasn't produced a 302 in almost 30 years.. How old are you? AM>> ;-) AM> ML>> I never knew they did. I recall the 283, 307, and 350 v8. AM> AM> Yes, they sold it at least in '68 and '69 as the Z/28 engine. In '70 AM> it went to 350. As most people know the 302 was being built by AM> people for high rpm use before Chevy sold one. The racers called it AM> a 301, and it was made by putting the 283 crankshaft in a 327 block. AM> This ended up with 301.66 cubic inch with the 4" bore and 3" stroke. The 302 began a production run in 67 and was superceded by the 350 in the 69 model. BTW, the 69 model also was sold as the 70 model until February of 1970, when the 70 1/2, 2nd generation body was introduced. The 327 also met it's demise the same year, as they introduced the 307 in 69. The 327's bore was 4.002, which made the 3" de-stroked 327 closer to 302 than you think, 301.89ci.... AM> The high rpm horsepower from the relatively small size was great for AM> road racing, although more cubes were better for drag racing and AM> street use. Because it's easier to move a load with torque than high rpm horsepower. AM> I recall a guy in high school that had a stock '69 Z/28 that would AM> get rubber in all 4 gears. This was the 302 with single 4 barrel AM> Holley and a Muncie close-ratio 4 speed. AM> You could also order a dual-quad, cross-ram intake setup for AM> racing, which is one of the rarest options found on the '69 302 AM> Z/28. If it was short-lived as an option, it meant that the factory guys doing the racing and testing didn't think much of it. That cross-ram wasn't worth the money you had to pay for it because the 4bbl version would run right with it. AM> of over 30 years and is still available in pickups, although this may AM> be near an end. The new Gen III SBC (like the LS1) is rumored to have AM> a complete line in the works as a 4.8 liter @ ~255 HP, a 5.3 liter @ AM> ~265 HP, and a 6 liter @ near 300 HP. On my personal craft, yearly. Mainly to clear out salt residue and the lubricant was STILL functionally there in all cases. -cc * SLMR 2.1a * The universe is laughing behind your back. --- Renegade v5-11 Exp * Origin: The Bearsville BBS * Warren, MI * (810) 582-9429 (1:120/650) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: EGR00020 Date: 12/21/97 From: CHRIS ZYCHSKI Time: 03:15am \/To: RONNIE THOMPSON (Read 0 times) Subj: '91 Mk VII RT> RT> RT> RT>Go to your local autoparts store and get the "Haynes" manual o RT>tha RT> RT> RT> RT>vehicle.
