If I JE> remember correctly Haynes manuals didn't go into overhauling automatic JE> transmissions, did they? No, but as I mentioned earlier, most people aren't gonna be doing that, in their own yards. JE> I have completely rebuit motors, manual and JE> automatic transmissions, differentials, drive shafts, front ends, JE> carburetors, etc. ALL in my driveway or house garage. I started JE> this back in 1939. Since that time I read everything I could get my JE> hands on and pestered more knowledgeable mechanics to learn more. I JE> finally figured out "If they can learn it and do it, I can too" - There are a lot of people who will do exactly as you did, but again, for the most part, most people are NOT gonna be doing tranny rebuilds in their back yards. Most mechanics will even tell you to not do carb rebuilds, in your back yard, UNLESS you have some compressed air source. The passages need to be blown out, before putting the carb back together, and most people don't have an air compressor, at their house. JE> and proceeded to do just that. I did have a garage for a few years JE> after getting out of the AF (WWII), but that went bust when my JE> partner skipped out with all the tools and left me with all the bills. Well that certainly wasn't too fair! JE> Nope, I am not and never was ASE certified in anything. However, I do JE> honestly believe I could easily have made the grade. May have been able to do so. The tests are pretty tough and get into a lot of stuff that is NOT in Haynes, OR in a factory manual. They will tell you how to fix something, they usually won't tell you why something does omething or what causes a problem, etc. That is a lot of what the ASE tests have, in the way of questions. JE> Even though I, like you, either can't physically or do NOT desire to JE> do so much any longer, I still want to know and understand as much as I JE> possibly can about my vehicles. Sure keeps the shops from "pulling the JE> wool over my eyes". AMEN, on the wool part. If I ever sell my insurance agency (and have just added another 500 clients), I will probably open up another shop, a top rate one with HONESTY as the top virtue. I'll have to take some refresher ourses, and will do so, but all in all, I do like doing mechanic work, dirty as it may be (G). JE> Much later. JE> Actually, I am adding to this answer. I just came back from a Neuro JE> specialist. He gave me the bad news that I SHOULD have a back JE> operation to relieve the pressure on my spinal cord (called spinal JE> stenosis) in the near future. (He doesn't operate.) He said not to wait JE> too long or I just might lose decent functioning of my left leg. What I JE> am leading up to is that I have been doing less and less of the grunt JE> work because of my back, thus the disposing of my manuals. Ya do mean the antimony and calcium were kept in separate plates (antimony in the positive plates, calcium in the negatives), right? Because antimony poisons lead-calcium for batteries. Been there, done that. Sometimes, tapping the carb Yes, I've also experienced that, but it is rare on cars with fuel filters. On a boat, with a Holley, I've pinched the transfer tube O-ring and had a helluva problem! It's pretty easy to pinpoint when you realize it's flooding and leaking from the tube at the same time. RT> Q-jets are good carbs, as are Holleys. Holleys are the WORST ones RT> that I have EVER seen, for having problems with the smallest of trash. Since the ones I've seen with trash were in boats, I can't blame it on the carb but rather the tanks and filtration in them. I do prefer to go with a Holley for tuning, but stock the Q-jets are good. Of course when it needs replacement, the performance Holleys usually beat the price and bolt right on aluminum manifolds. You may have seen Holleys with brass needles have a flooding problem. Most carbs have a Viton (rubber) needle tip which is more forgiving. Whenever I change to a Holley I'll install a glass fuel filter in the line just before the carb. I've never had a flooding problem with this setup. One more thing is that Holley still has brass floats available. --- Blue Wave/386 v2.20 [NR] * Origin: River Canyon Rd.
