Ronnie, I just disposed of ALL my shop manuals (factory and Haynes type) a couple weeks ago except for the two vehicles I own. If I remember correctly Haynes manuals didn't go into overhauling automatic transmissions, did they? I have completely rebuit motors, manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, drive shafts, front ends, carburetors, etc. ALL in my driveway or house garage. I started this back in 1939. Since that time I read everything I could get my hands on and pestered more knowledgeable mechanics to learn more. I finally figured out "If they can learn it and do it, I can too" - and proceeded to do just that. I did have a garage for a few years after getting out of the AF (WWII), but that went bust when my partner skipped out with all the tools and left me with all the bills. Nope, I am not and never was ASE certified in anything. However, I do honestly believe I could easily have made the grade. Even though I, like you, either can't physically or do NOT desire to do so much any longer, I still want to know and understand as much as I possibly can about my vehicles. Sure keeps the shops from "pulling the wool over my eyes". Much later. Actually, I am adding to this answer. I just came back from a Neuro specialist. He gave me the bad news that I SHOULD have a back operation to relieve the pressure on my spinal cord (called spinal stenosis) in the near future. (He doesn't operate.) He said not to wait too long or I just might lose decent functioning of my left leg. What I am leading up to is that I have been doing less and less of the grunt work because of my back, thus the disposing of my manuals. I've also been distributing some of my equip, to my kids. Gave engine stand and engine hoist to my son-in-law for example. Guess maybe it is time to slow down a bit. :-( * OLX 2.1 TD * Press any key to continue?
