There were claims that the windchill factor affected inanimate objects such as car radiators as well as humans. Maybe this quoted article will straighten all out. The following is a quote from our newspaper today (16 Dec 97) - article by John Willing, one of our weather forecasters. (I had contacted him last week and suggested an article on Windchill Factor and this was his response). ALL emphasises >xxx< are mine. Mispellings are mine also. :-( "John Willing's Weather - You and Your Health. Do you wonder just what the wind chill temperature is? Wind chill is nothing more than an >estimate< of how cold our skin seems to >think< it is when we're exposed to cold winds. It is frequently misunderstood. You can't read it on a thermometer, and plants and non living objects can't feel it at all. Wind chill was strictly created for human beings, and to a lesser degree for animals. Animals have a natural coat of fur, which makes the cold wind have less of an impact on them. If the actual air temperature is 34 degrees, but the wind chill is 24 degrees will the water in your car radiator freeze? >No<, not until the actual air temperature drops to 32 degrees or less. >Your plants won't freeze either<. It doesn't matter if the wind chill is -30 degrees, if the >actual temperature is above 32 degrees nothing will freeze<. But human beings will say if FEELS colder than freezing on their face and hands just because of the wind. Every year a few people tell me that the wind chill is stupid, foolish, inaccurate, unimportant, just a scare tactic to frighten the public. I agree that it doesn't take into account how humid the air is, and in the original experiments the tests were done on a can of water, not a person! And some people tolerate cold weather so well, the wind chill seems unnecessary. But for those with a different temperament, or who are young or old, not is great physical shape, not dressed appropriately for cold weather, not in good health, or they take medications that make them weather sensitive, these folks appreciate knowing the wind chill." End of Quote Perhaps this will lay to rest some of the misconceptions over wind chill factor that have been espoused in this conference and in the Home Improvement Conference. * OLX 2.1 TD * People who jump off bridges in Paris are in Seine. --- RemoteAccess 2.50+ * Origin: Northern Lights! * San Antonio * 210-499-6299 V34/VFC (1:387/23) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: EGN00011 Date: 12/18/97 From: MARK LOGSDON Time: 07:35pm \/To: ROY J. Marc, when you (jump) start the car with the dead battery, it draws current from power sources: (a) the charged battery in the running car and (b) the alternator in the running car. The two power sources are in PARALLEL, and BOTH will provide current. --- QScan/PCB v1.19b / 01-0232 * Origin: IBMNet Connection - Indpls, IN - 317-882-5575 28.8 USR (1:231/1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 246 AUTOMOTIVE Ref: EGN00013 Date: 12/18/97 From: MARK LOGSDON Time: 07:35pm \/To: JAY EMRIE (Read 0 times) Subj: Battery sizes JE> ML>Yeah, I just pulled the battery from my lawn tractor for the winter.
