But new here. First let us define trems. Four-cycle means the piston strokes ( moves up or down ) four times 1. Intake, piston going down 2. compression, piston coming up [injection at near top dead center] 3. Power, piston going down 4. exhaust. piston coming up So the piston pushes and sucks the air in and out, stokes #1 and #4. Two-cycle Detroit Diesels. Are not model air plane or lawn mower engines. They do have engine oil and exhaust valves. Let us start with the piston down at bottom dead center. The exhaust valves, up in the head, are open. The piston has uncovered air holes in the cylinder walls. And a blower is pushing fresh air in and exhaust gasses out (this is called scavning). The piston starts moving up, covers the air holes, and the valves close, this is compression stoke. At top dead center injection is happening, the piston is moving down. This is the power stroke. Now as the piston is about 90 Degrees ATDC, the exhaust valves start opening. At about 132 degrees ATDC, the piston starts uncovering the air holes, to scavning again. The best all round diesel tech. book is " DIESEL MECHANICS " by ERICH J. SCHULZ #ISBN 0-07-055664-4. I hope this has been helpful. I just work on it during the summer tho, since it is in an unheated garage. We stripped it down to the frame. I have the cab on the frame. We were starting to get the AC unit mounted when we quit for the year. We also have plans for power windows and door locks. I owned the truck back in high school when my then girlfriend (she's my wife now), were dating. Lots of memories. The truck has an interesting story to it. My dad bought the truck back in about 1972. He had it for about five years before he sold it to me. My wife and I had it for about seven years, then I sold it to my brother. He only owned it about two years, when he sold it to my uncle. He had it for about six years, when I found out he was going to trade it off. Wife and I decided to buy it back for sentimental reasons. So I own it again. Anyway it went through five owners (counting me twice) and it always had the Brookbank name on the title. I'm hoping to have it running next summer. We want to put it all together again and make sure the air and power windows are going to work A-OK. Then we're going to tear it down again and rebuild and repaint everything. I used to have my own body shop and still have all of the tools. later mike --- * OLX 2.1 TD * "I hate Victor Hugo," said Les, miserably. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: Palace City BBS (1:14/640.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 245 OLD TRUCKS Ref: DG500000 Date: 12/02/96 From: MATTHIAS KNAPPIK Time: 08:00pm \/To: ALLE (Read 5 times) Subj: two stroke diesel Tach zusammen, many thanks for so many replies! over here in germany, two stroker diesel are >nonexistend<. but in the u.s., some people seem to work with these kind of engines. i learned a lot just by these mails i got. maybe there is more about it to learn. obviously two stroke diesels are the bigger ones, like in ships, big tractors or buildingsite-machinery. but to put in figures, what size are they (volume), how fast are they (revs), how much power do they have? just to have the global view. what are the advantages or disadvantages of two strokers against four strokers? always willing to learn something new......:-) bit bald Matthias Telebim 05042 989020, Fax 989023, BBS 989024 --- CrossPoint v3.1 R * Origin: Die OLDTIMER BOX 05042 989024 (2:241/1130.12) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 245 OLD TRUCKS Ref: DGG00000 Date: 12/11/96 From: SEAN DUNBAR Time: 11:01am \/To: ALL (Read 8 times) Subj: Just FYI... * Original message posted in area [F] Automotive * Cross posted to area [F] BBS Software [F] Car Audio [F] Fido SysOps [F] Old Cars [F] Old Engines [F] Old Trucks [F] Gay Teens [F] Team OS/2 [F] Teen SysOps [FEP] El Paso SysOps My old ISP (aip.net) went out of business :( So, I have a new email address, and web page, which is in my sig (the web page is the same as the one that was redone at the beginning of the month, just a different server)... It would go into reverse fine, but no forward gears. I added fluid since it was a little low, but still wouldn't move for awhile. It finally went in to drive when the engine was fully warmed up (temp guage hit the Normal area). The truck has 141k miles on it, and the tranny's never given me trouble before. Changed the fluid and filter about 10k miles ago. I haven't driven the truck since this happened, but I'm going to try changing the fluid/filter again today if it keeps this up.. Any ideas what this is? I replaced the modulator last summer (engine was getting a not-so-healthy drink of ATF). It drove great once it finally went in to gear. It sometimes does something similar on cold mornings, but it'll creep forward, then go into gear when I rev it up (I tried revving it several times to 2500 last night, no go, no creep). Is it just time to get it rebuilt? Thanks.
