If you go to a commercial communications store (a real radio store, not a Radio Shack), they'll be glad to sell you a handfull of rubber plugs made to patch antenna holes in sheet metal. I once bought a Wildlife Department pickup which must have had a dozen radio antennas mounted in the roof. One trip to the local Motorola 2-way place got me enough plugs to fix them all. They're cheap, too - as I recall, I came out with change from a $5.00 bill. Today, I swear that pickup's roof has more rubber than it does sheet metal. I know these plugs come in 3/8 inch and 3/4 inch diameters but they may also come in other diameters (3/8 and 3/4 were the only sizes I needed at the time). Regards. True, and I do have an electric drill.. but then I'll have to patch the other holes.. 'specially since I occasionally go through deep water (when it rains, it REALLY pours here). Deepest I've been through was up to the bottom of my headlights (kept right on running, though the exhaust sounded funny under water )... Here's a snipe hunt I'm on now: I have a '77 F-250 HiBoy pickup, 351M with a NP435 4 speed, NP 205 Xfer case, power steering and brakes, no a/c. On my steering, between the bottom end of the steering column and the input of my steering gear is a shaft with a universal type joint on the column side and a ball type joint on the gear ide (with a rubber boot). The universal is shot, giving me sloppy steering (4-6" on the steering wheel of play). This universal used to be available through Ford, now it's listed as "obsolete" (latin for go buy a new truck). The weird part is that the WHOLE shaft assembly (both joints, shaft, etc) IS available, for a mere $370.00 ... Now if they make the shaft assembly, why not the epair parts? Answer: they either made too many or they want more of the big bucks from those that aren't buying the new trucks. If anyone has even an idea (other than salvage yards) of where I might purchase a repair kit for the universal type side of this, leave a reply. It will be greatly appreciated. If anyone has a truck with this shaft that they are parting out (and has good parts on it) I'd gladly pay them $30 plus shipping for the entire shaft. I've seen three in local yards here for $25 ut they aren't much better. I may try tearing the one apart I have and building my own bushings if I don't come up with a viable, reasonable solution. - Pedit Ver 2.6 Russ Blakeman, SysOp Extraodinaire Blue Moon of Kentucky BBS/Harned, KY 40144 FidoNet 1:2450/500 VETLink #96 19:201/400 BBS/Fax (502) 756-6991 ...A hen tomorrow is more valuable than an egg today. --- ProBoard v2.15 [Reg] * Origin: Blue Moon of Kentucky BBS / Harned,KY / (502) 756-6991 1:2450/500) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 245 OLD TRUCKS Ref: DEU00001 Date: 10/22/96 From: RUSS BLAKEMAN Time: 10:58pm \/To: SEAN DUNBAR (Read 3 times) Subj: A little off topic, but.. Shouldn't be a problem if you manufacture adapter plates that bolt to the new seat and the older holes, out of 1/8 or 3/16 plate steel. I didin't have to o it, and I have a seat from a 1991 F150 in my '77 F250. The holes were within 1/16" of being in line, so I used a rotary "drill file" to oval shape the holes to fit. In the case of a seat that the width of the brackets is a problem, you may have to adapt with plates. This was the case in using a ench seat from a Dodge van in my '79 E150 van, where the mounting holes existed, but the previous owner left his seat behind when he moved (real dipstick, his guy). - Pedit Ver 2.6 Russ Blakeman, SysOp Extraodinaire Blue Moon of Kentucky BBS/Harned, KY 40144 FidoNet 1:2450/500 VETLink #96 19:201/400 BBS/Fax (502) 756-6991 ...Trust me, would I lie to you..... As long as you reinforce the floor with steel plate to keep the floor from being pulled through in the case of an extremely quick stop (in case of meeting an immovable object perhaps?). Some people like using aluminum plate but don't consider corrosion between steel and aluminum (called dissimilar metal corrosion) and the aluminum rots the steel, and then the floor is Flintstone style. Same thing goes with using aluminum pop rivets in the steel panels. You CAN use them, but only if primer is applied to the rivet before it's installed, to keep the two metals from direct contact. - Pedit Ver 2.6 Russ Blakeman, SysOp Extraodinaire Blue Moon of Kentucky BBS/Harned, KY 40144 FidoNet 1:2450/500 VETLink #96 19:201/400 BBS/Fax (502) 756-6991 ...One who is in peril thinks with their legs. --- ProBoard v2.15 [Reg] * Origin: Blue Moon of Kentucky BBS / Harned,KY / (502) 756-6991 1:2450/500) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 245 OLD TRUCKS Ref: DEV00000 Date: 10/24/96 From: SEAN DUNBAR Time: 08:32pm \/To: CLOYCE OSBORN (Read 2 times) Subj: Re: Patching holes CO> I'll tell you a little secret. Just few ideas ------ Got an Navistar dealer (IHC--International Harverster) as they used a lot of u-joints in thier steering systems. Also you may want to try going to Farm tractor dealers as those people also used many differnent type of U-joints in farm tractors. Infact I beleive GM used some also in the bread vans as we called them in service (USAF) IE the square cube vans and such, so that is a start in your quest. PS. spent 4 years there in Chanute 1963-67. Also went back several times for schooling as I managed to do 30 years all together 4 active 26 in WIS-Air Guard. I drove through there this spring and you wouldn't believe it. NO fences, guard shacks most all of the mounted birds are gone and of all things they cut a road around on the back ro south side where the housing was. If you spent any ime there drive back some time just to see the changes. I have somewhat sloppy steering on my '80 F-150 pickup, 351M, C-6 automatic, A/C, power steering and brakes, 9" rear. Not as much play as you talk of though (more like 1" or 2"). RB> listed as "obsolete" (latin for go buy a new truck). The weird part Probably be the same for mine. I've had a hard time finding a few parts for it lately (like the interior locks; they're the sliding type, which your truck probably has.. they only used them for 2 years with this body style)..
