I started working on my '41 Plymouth P/U about 4-5 years ago, it is still a long ways from being done, or even part way donw? The '48 was to get the 440 early this summer, yeah, right! 440 still on floor, not rebuilt yet. Pummill has a tag line that asks "where did all my money go?", I want to know where all of my time went? Besides working from 5:30am to 7pm. At least I got most of my small machinee shop done in the garage. Walls, lights, air, heat, doors, benches, wiring, parts washer, valve grinder, numerous air toys, and a whole stack of heads to do. And I mean =ON= the coast. 74-81 Chevy trucks are also a dime a dozen and I suspect will become cheaper in the near future as they begin the OBD II smog testing. You might be able to locate a sound bed in Texas where the snow doesn't get too deep and they don't use salt. That may be the closest you'll come to finding rust free stuff...Good luck.. ... George gets it wholesale from either Bob Drake Reproductions in Grant's Pass, Oregon (503) 474-0043 or Dennis Carpenter Reproductions in Charlotte, NC (704) 786-8139. Picking the stuff up locally saves me on exchange, usually lower prices and the hassle of ordering from the USA. Truck parts didn't change much from year to year. The parts they still have for my '47 are the tailgate hooks, chains and covers. They were used into the '70s. The gear was chewed up terribly making it impossible to start. I thought (even after 30 years of working on cars and trucks) that the flywheel and gear were one piece. Not so, I found, after calling my local auto parts store. It's a gear assembly, shrunk onto a rabbet in the back of the flywheel. The old gear is easy to drive off with a mechanic's helper (BIG hammer). The new one is slightly too small to just drive on, and would be too much work anyway. I heard it was "sweat fitted" (which means expanded then cooled). So rather than fork out $15 or more to a machine shop, I decided to try heating the gear and freezing the flywheel. I set the flywheel in the freezer (don't tell my wife) for an hour and the gear into a 500 degree oven for 30 minutes. I had a block of wood to hold the flywheel off the ground (I figured I'd have to tap it around into place) and when I grabbed the gear out of the oven itha pliers and sat it in place to see the difference - it sat right into place, o tapping or anything. Then I let it all stabilize to room temperature for 30 minutes and it was ready to reinstall. Many of you may have already known this, but many others may not. This way they'll save a trip to the machine shop/welder when it's time to do one on their own vehicle. - Pedit Ver 2.6 Russ Blakeman, SysOp Extraodinaire Blue Moon of Kentucky BBS/Harned, KY 40144 FidoNet 1:2450/500 VETLink #96 19:201/400 BBS/Fax (502) 756-6991 ...What is learned in youth is understood in age. --- ProBoard v2.15 [Reg] * Origin: Blue Moon of Kentucky BBS / Harned,KY / (502) 756-6991 1:2450/500) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 245 OLD TRUCKS Ref: DEC00015 Date: 10/06/96 From: MATTHIAS KNAPPIK Time: 05:54pm \/To: ALLE (Read 4 times) Subj: silicone brake fluid Tach zusammen, i think its time that i put in something to this area as the host of the german oldtimer-net, i want to give good and profound techincal information to my nodes, point and users. at the moment we are discussing silicone brake fluid. this stuff is fairly unknown over here, and i only know it from my chevy van, i had years ago. one can buy it in us-car stores and tuning stores. i dont know if it is even legal to use here in germany - but the us-car-drivers don't give a shit about german legislation, when it coms to using the -real stuff- what i would need, would be a kind of product-information on this brakefluid. the only stuff i know of ist manufactured by cartel. does anybody here in this echo have an e-mail or fax from cartel or any other manufactor of silicone brake fluid? can anybody get me a porductinformation of silicone brake fluid via fido nm, echomail or e-mail (mk@desert.fido.de)? i would like to put it on the net to inform the users not just with advertising slogans but with real information how to use it, what kind of make it is, advantages and disadvantages. can you help me from over there? bit bald Matthias Telebim 05042 989020, Fax 989023, BBS 989024 --- CrossPoint v3.1 R * Origin: Die OLDTIMER BOX 05042 989024 (2:241/1130.12) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 245 OLD TRUCKS Ref: DED00000 Date: 10/07/96 From: JIM HADFIELD Time: 09:31pm \/To: SEAN DUNBAR (Read 3 times) Subj: who's here? Yours RB> is 3 years from antique... True... and it's begging me for a paint job right now too :-/ (lots of chips, drivers side is faded badly)... though it's probably low mileage for an 80 ;) (I have 133k miles or so on it now.. translates into somewhere between 7000-8000 miles a year I guess.. had 100k when I got it last year though). On a side note... do you have any idea where I can find the plastic door panels? The one on the drivers side is faded badly, and has some nicks in it from the window handle scraping it. I looked in JC Whitney's catalog, but theirs don't have the chrome trim, or the padded armrest. Has the sliding type locks under the armrest... I've checked most of the junkyards here while looking for other parts, and all theirs are either the wrong colour or melted (on the two I've seen that had fires.. no parts I could use from either of them).
