She did a one hour talk on the uses of herbs in her books, then signed books for everyone. It was a great time! POne of our best signings ever! I just finished the newest Valerie Wolzien mystery, Weddings are Murder...and on the day that I finished it, my son got engaged!!! Hmmm....do you think that means anything?????? I started Thomas Perry's "Vanishing Act". Have heard wonderful reviews of it, the first two chapters are intriguing. It was a very satisfying story, both during the reading and when it was done. The characters were certainly not cuddly, but they were appealing and nicely complex. The cop hero is named, wonderfully, Dog Cicero. It's not an easy book - requires some work - it's not mind candy (rather like the difference between eating jelly beans and chocolate mousse) - but it's worth it. If I had any quarrel with Mr. Ruell, it was the touch of deus ex machina in the ending, but if another reader disagrees with me, I'll give way gracefully. Patrick Ruell has several other books out, and I'll certainly be getting another very soon. For now he's on my B list. ... I'm not particularly interested in boats and I loathe places like Santa Barbara, but I liked this book rather a lot. The hero is the assistant harbormaster and the heroine is a Coast Guard officer who has whatever the feminine equivalent of balls is. (What is the feminine equivalent of balls?) Anyway, she's tough. I knew the answer to the mystery early on (which I consider a defect), and I expect anyone else will, too, but I still liked it. Although Gibbs has published several other novels, none of which are familiar to me, and several non-fiction books on sailing, SHOT IN THE DARK is the first of a series; the next one is FADE TO BLACK. Haven't read it yet. Definitely B list. ... Why is the alphabet in that order?
