They're by far Ellis Peters's > best. JM> I was suggesting the contemporary series because 1) they are closer in JM> period to Agatha Christie than Brother Cadfael is In period, yes, the settings being several centuries apart, but Brother Cadfael is to my mind close kin to Jane Marple. JM> Bro. Cadfael may indeed be the best, but JM> there's a funny thing that happens with really good JM> writers: even their early (and some would say weak) books JM> are often far and away better than other writers' best JM> stuff. Whatever you may think of the Felse novels in JM> general, I think FALLEN INTO THE PIT is a fine book, and JM> deserves a look-see in its own right. I don't know whether I've read the particular book you mention, but I've read at least a half-dozen of the non-Cadfael novels and I found them without exception boring. I would never recommend any of them. Another funny thing that happens with writers is that one will write two or more series, like Christie wrote the Miss Marples and the Poirots, and one series will be far and away better novels than the other. I always found the Miss Marple books to be more interesting and more engaging than the Poirots. And most of her books that are neither Marple nor Poirot range from dull to dumb. I would also recommend Randy Wayne White, > Geoffrey > Norman, and Ross Thomas. JM> All fine writers, to be sure. What features of their work JM> might make them attractive to fans of Agatha Christie? Good writing. JM> (BTW, I wouldn't have used that expression "inexperienced JM> mystery JM> reader" -- we all have areas of unexplored ground here, the JM> point was JM> merely to suggest possible interesting directions for new JM> explorations.) I used the word "inexperienced" because the person to whom you were making these recommendations had said in another post that he'd read very few mysteries of any stripe at all. While I'm sure my readings in the mystery genre have left areas of ground unexplored, I do consider myself an experienced mystery reader, and I do not consider the word "inexperienced" any sort of insult or put-down, merely a descriptive term that is useful. ...
