It's not critical that you read the LPW's in order, but if you do, you'll see just how much Lord Peter changes as a person over the course of the series. In "Whose Body?" Peter is very much the frivolous young thing. As time goes on, Sayers makes him grow up. Also, the Harriet Vane books weren't published as the last four. As I recall, both MURDER MUST ADVERTISE and THE NINE TAILORS take place during the same time period as the Vane books. Do read them in order, and watch out in the later books for the subtle ways in which Sayers refers back to the earlier books, often casting the events in the stories in a more serious light. It's a masterful job of making a coherent whole out of parts that weren't designed to fit. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: F1A00000 Date: 01/05/98 From: DENNIS MENARD Time: 06:41am \/To: PAUL KRUEGER (Rcvd) (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: Sherlock Holmes -[ Quoting Paul Krueger <01-03-98 13:32>, to Dennis Menard ]- PK> Never heard of it before. PK> PS Do you know how I can get the Baker Street Journal and whether back PK> issuses are available? "The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes" is a Penguin Book, first published 1983, (though I only spotted it a few months ago), ISBN: 0-14-006432-X. Here is the text from the back cover: "These remarkable pieces, many previously uncollected, provide an intriguing insight into the background of the Sherlock Holmes stories. A detailed introduction reveals the sources on which the author drew, explaining how names were chosen, what Conan Doyle and his contemporaries thought of the great detective, how the myths about Sherlock Holmes developed and how he achieved his pre-eminent position. In short, a literary feast for addicts of Baker Street's most famous resident and a tempting treat for browsers." Book is compiled by Richard Lancelyn Green. 146 page Introduction, 400 pages and 16 articles total. A nice addition to the "Canon." :) I am afraid that I'm not familiar with the Baker Street Journal.
