James, Ellis Peters and Elizabeth George, have SH> mixed feelings about Anne Perry, and have not read William SH> Bayers or Martha Grimes. And I've read only one of the SH> Falco books. Bayers is an American writer who has a series going that features a NYPD cop named Janek, played admirably by Richard Crenna. Several of them have been televised in the past few years. SH> It's been some time since I read CAIN and I admit that I SH> had misgivings because what I thought was the solution had SH> been made impossible. And while I don't mind the assertion SH> of non-existent facts, there should be a clue to the effect SH> that appearance is not reality. Similarly, if a character SH> is likely to lie, one can expect some statement to that SH> effect. Right--the author should provide clues that this sort of thing can take place--as it is, it appears as though she included that solely to lead readers astray and didn't give a clue that this was a possibility until the last page or so. SH> But what I dislike more about Perry is that her characters don't SH> develop. P. D. James, on the other hand, is superb in that area -- Hey, what you mean--no character development? Hester and William got a kiss in there a volume or two ago! SH> while reading her work centered around the nuclear SH> powerplant at Larksoken, I was tremendously impressed at SH> the development of the characters. I particularly remember SH> the admin assistant who turns out to be a German-recruited SH> terrorist. A good story. FINISHED: Anne Perry. CAIN HIS BROTHER FINISHED: JG Ballard. I also was given an ARC of the next Michael Connelly, "Blood Work", due out in March 1998. Can't wait to get into that one, it is not part of his Bosch series, but a stand-alone about an ex-FBI agent who gets a heart transplant from a murder victim.
