I have -> read every one of her books including her newest, "Endangered Species'. -> I think it is fascinating that she actually IS a ranger. Yes, that gives this author the perfect background for her books, and it is a refreshing change from the well-worn police precinct. I also like that she does not have her female characters being prissy Miss Manners caricitures who would *never* hiccup in public, never mind tell someone to ..... :-)) That female cariciture is a bit well worn, and even Scarlet O'Hara in 'Gone With The Wind' wasn't *that* much of a Goody Two Shoes! When a gal is tired, cold, hungry, responsible for the safety of a burned fire fighter while waiting for rescue in the aftermath of a forrest fire, and confronted by a murder, she is realistically likely to be dirty and cranky. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Mr Zip "Home of Aunt Gabby Echo" (1:123/17) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: EEM00003 Date: 10/16/97 From: SUZZE TIERNAN Time: 01:07pm \/To: MICHAEL LABRECK (Read 1 times) Subj: Agatha Christie readers? -=> Quoting Michael LaBreck to All <=- ML> Hi Everyone: ML> Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm new to this echo, and trying ML> to find some Agatha Christie readers out there. You pointed out that the fido useage sure has dwindled and gone FW> to the net. Well... in time it may come back. FW> Meanwhile, a friend put me on to a GOOD writer! These are mysteries set in US Nat'l Parks, and FW> the author is a park ranger at Mesa Verde- The details of the stories have the great details needed FW> to make a book ring true.... such as what it's like to be caught in a FW> forest fire. The author's name is NEVADA BARR, and the books include FW> FIRESTORM and TRACK OF THE CAT. I believe I've heard about these books. Thanks, I'm going to look for them next time I go to the Public Library. I love books that ring true. I recently read a book (mystery of course), written by a retired San Diego police officer, that takes place in San Diego. As a long time resident of the city, the book came alive for me and I could picture exactly where the crimes were taking place, as I lived in some of the areas mentioned. Well Jan, it's nice talking to you again. The name of the book I just mentioned, escapes me at the moment, (getting a bit long in the tooth you know, and tend to be forgetful at times) but it will come back to me and I'll pass the info on to you.
