It is not quite in that riveting category, but is a good read. It concerns a serial killer, and the one murder hidden among his kills, the double murder he didn't commit, and the detective who finds out who did commit it. The reader knows who did it, as we are shown the entire set up, the reason for the murders, and the means the murder uses to carry it out, and still have an airtight alibi. And the error which causes the whole cloth of deciet to fray apart... There is an ironic twist at the end. And there is an outline of the means used in real- life cases to solve crimes which have been in the headlines. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Mr Zip "Home of Aunt Gabby Echo" (1:123/17) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: EEJ00000 Date: 10/13/97 From: DOROTHY REYNOLDS Time: 10:22am \/To: JAN WERTZ (Read 1 times) Subj: Detective -=> Quoting Fn:jan Wertz@1:123/17.0 to All <=- FW> I just finished reading DETECTIVE by Arthur Hailey, author of books FW> such as AIRPORT and WHEELS. It is not quite in that riveting category, FW> but is a good read. Hello Jan, Thanks for the tip. Arthur Hailey is one of my favorite authors. And, avid mystery reader that I am, will look for the book. I've been reading quite a few police procedurals and court room drama books lately. Guess you could lump these into the mystery genre, as there is usually a surprise ending to them. ie, the person on trial isn't the real perpetrator, or the police procedurals keep you wondering if the person they are investigating, is the real killer. Especially like Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series. I'm presently reading one by him titled "Romance." It's good and full of a lot of humor. I don't read them in any particular order. Just as I see one that tweaks my curiousity. Haven't been disappointed with him yet. This echo sure has dwindled, hasn't it? Guess most everyone has switched to the Internet. Kind of sad in a way, don't you think? Nice talking to you. You pointed out that the fido useage sure has dwindled and gone to the net. Well... in time it may come back. One friend of mine was SO delighted to go to the net... there were just SO many people there!! After a while he discovered most of them were teenagers pretending to be stockbrokers. The adults may just come back to the fidos! That is also true of the moderator of one of the local bbs's. Meanwhile, a friend put me on to a GOOD writer! And increased my stack of books by 5! These are mysteries set in US Nat'l Parks, and the author is a park ranger at Mesa Verde- one of my Very Favorite Places in the Whole World!! (I have been to Europe a couple of times, including living in England for 3 years. Spent a few weeks in Norway in June of '96.) The details of the stories have the great details needed to make a book ring true.... such as what it's like to be caught in a forest fire. The author's name is NEVADA BARR, and the books include FIRESTORM and TRACK OF THE CAT. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Mr Zip "Home of Aunt Gabby Echo" (1:123/17) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: EEK00000 Date: 10/10/97 From: FRED RUNK Time: 11:52am \/To: SUZZE TIERNAN (Read 1 times) Subj: Current reads -=>While in the White Hart, Suzze Tiernan explained to All that<=- ST> I am re-sending this as I am surprised I have not received any replies ST> to it. Not much mystery reading lately, except for a few stories in CRIME THROUGH TIME, a collection of historical mysteries edited by Miriam Grace Monfedo and Sharan Newman, and the newest William Monk novel in paperback from Anne Perry, WEIGHED IN THE BALANCE. I was disappointed in the Monk, and have finally figured out that I am going to be disappointed every time, because the way she structures the books is inherently not to my liking. Basically, person X is in trouble, and Our Heroes scramble like mad to solve the mystery in order to save person X in the nick of time. Some critical piece of evidence is always brought out at the last minute, which is not always forseeable, rather like Perry Mason. So the reader can't have the satisfaction of solving the mystery in advance, except by guessing -- and if the reader does guess, that can render the book unsatisfactory (as it did a couple of books ago, when I said to myself "I hope she isn't going to do Y" on page 5 and it turned out I was right). And of course she only advances the meta-story (the relationship between Hester Latterly, Monk, and Oliver Rathbone; and Monk's regaining of his lost memory) by inches each time. At any rate, since I much prefer the Dorothy Sayers / Mary Stewart method of abiding by the fair play rule, but doing masterful misdirection so that the reader doesn't notice the important clues, then Perry's storytelling style is always going to drive me crazy. She can write her books any way she likes, of course. If that's the way she chooses to tell her story, so be it. But it's frustrating because I've gotten rather fond of the characters and want to know what happens to them, and Perry doesn't seem to care about them much at all -- they're just people pushed around on stage in a mechanical way to make the plot go. I think Fidonet has some holes in it!!! Hi, Suzze -- your message made it around this time. I think we've been hit by a double-whammy of summer doldrums and erratic Fido feeds. Most of my reading lately has been non-mysterious, except for dipping my toes into CRIME THROUGH TIME (I've read the Laurie King short story in it, but not much else) and reading the new William Monk paperback by Anne Perry (and then wondering why I bothered). It's shocking to me that I am now TWO novels behind reading Dick Francis! Usually when his books come in, they are in the read-right away pile, but somehow I never got around to reading TO THE HILT. (It's been sitting there in hardcover, waiting all this time.) I also have 10 LB. PENALTY in the to-read stack. Ditto for Richard A. Lupoff's newest mystery, THE RADIO RED KILLER, which is set in a Berkeley public radio station. The book would be enjoyable enough on its own, but I bet it will be even more fun for me since I'll get a lot of the local references (and I know people who have worked for the real-life station that was the model for the fictional one). Good to see your message -- thanks for sending it around again. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: EEL00002 Date: 10/16/97 From: FRANK STARNS Time: 08:37pm \/To: FRED RUNK (Read 1 times) Subj: Echo traffic In another message you mentioned the lack of traffic; you are correct.
