We need to get some messaging going in here! I just finished the newest Diane Mott Davidson, "The Grilling Season". I wasn't too impressed. I'm not good at reviews, but this one didn't seem to have much to it. Goldy's ex, The Jerk, is arrested for murder, and since Arch whines a lot about it, she sets out to find out if he did it. Their boarder, MacGuire, is sick, and sleeps through the whole book. Even Goldy didn't seem to have her normal enthusiasm. I'd give it 3* out of 10. As Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors, I thought this might be something interesting--or a complete disaster as some other attempts at this sort of writing have turned out to be. I've just begun and so far it looks to be enjoyable. Of course, as a fan of JA, I was prepared to be pleased by it. I have also encountered at least one "borrowing" from one of Austen's novels, and one other sentence also seemed familiar. I suspect part of the fun here might be identifying the sources of various "borrowings" from Austen. The title of course echoes a 20th century mystery by....? FINISHED: Greg Bear. Just finished a really good read - "Death in the Garden" by Elizabeth Ironside. This book is not your run of the mill mystery and has an interesting twist at the end. It begins with a fragment which states "Today at half-past two in the afternoon I was acquitted of the murder of my husband." I get most of my books from the library and so don't know of the availability of this book in the book stores. It was published in 1995. Has anyone else read other books by this author? I haven't had the time to read them yet, so I don't know if this is "first" in the sense of "first publication" or "first" as in series story chronology. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0)
