' until the end. I do not like the liberty SB> Still worth reading, IMHO, but the end was disappointing, I thought - SB> closed with a fizzle. Looks like we had similar feelings about the ending. I haven't gone looking for the next book in the series 'cause of that. I think I remember reading a positive endorsement of 'A Letter of Mary' here in the echo. Probably from he indubitable Suzze. That gal is always about 3 books ahead it seems! :) SB> Hope it's been due to your having lots of fun stuff to read or Unfortunately my absence had more to do with a heavy workload and hectic travel schedule over the winter. Work will lessen a bit for the summer, but I have committed myself to a heavy volunteer schedule for Habitat for Humanity this summer, and that will eat up a lot of my 'spare' time. SB> that RW> really stands out, except for my current one, 'The Music of SB> Sounds like an interesting series. Wouldn't have likely picked them SB> up due to the titles, but may now that I have your rec. I also passed over them a number of times due to the titles, but I'm glad hat I finally took the plunge and read them. Have you ever read any of Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series? I found the two series similar in many spects, and both enjoyable. I was able to identify with and recognize a lot of the tt itudes and the general atmosphere, from my travels and work in Northern Alberta and B.C. I have just started a John Grisham book, 'The Runaway Jury'. I really don't like Grisham as a writer; talk about not being able to plot an ending, or concoct a realistic plot... This book was left at my house by a guest, who said I should give it a try. So far I'm about 50 pages into it and it's OK, but not a real grabber, and certainly doesn't live up to the gushing praise f the flyleaf comments. But then, when did a book ever live up to that kind of sycophantic verbage. Type at ya later, Bob 8-{) --- Blue Wave/Max v2.20 * Origin: TechTalk; Calgary, Alberta. I'm looking FR> forward to that one. It's his most complex work so far. I really like 'A Way Through the Woods', a very interesting plot. I specially liked the way Morse used the newspaper postings as a foil to the investigation. I'll be interested to see how the TV adaptation comes off. In general I've liked the TV series, John Thaw does a good job of portraying the character as Dexter depicts him in the books. Bob 8-{) --- Blue Wave/Max v2.20 * Origin: TechTalk; Calgary, Alberta. I think this is the third in his RW> Cecil Younger series and every bit as enjoyable as 'The Woman Who RW> Married a Bear' and 'The Curious Eat Themselves'. Younger is an RW> alchoholic Alaskan who admits to "not being a very good detective." RW> Straley writes beautifully and revealingly about life in Alaska. His RW> titles come from folk legends. Not all of the stories are riveting. but they are all fairly good. And they are short, which, with my nutty schedule, helps. They include some classical scenarios, such as 'the locked room'. There is also a nice Brother Cadfael in it, not surprising since Ellis Peters is the anthologist for this one. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0 * Origin: Mr Zip "Home of Aunt Gabby Echo" (1:123/17) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: E5D00000 Date: 05/07/97 From: ROBERT WHITE Time: 03:24am \/To: SUSAN BULLA (Read 2 times) Subj: Current reads -=> Quoting Susan Bulla to Robert White <=- a RW> positive endorsement of 'A Letter of Mary' here in the echo. SB> I had read the "teaser" for this at the end of "Monstrous" and it SB> sounded very interesting - maybe we'll find Mary and Sherlock in I'll probably read 'Mary' when I come across it, as King is a good writer and has convincing plots. But I won't be eagerly searching it out. I like her Kate Martinelli series better. SB> I'll have to admit that I'll read Grisham for pure popcorn. I started one a few years back and found it so hokey and the plot so poorly thoughtout that I literally ended up throwing it into the corner. I can't ven remember the title, it was the one about the two boys who witness a suicide and one becomes catatonic (SP?) and the other stumbles onto a ball-busting feminist lawyer. That's about where I quit reading. And my dislike is not due to the anti-male tone, but to the incredible leaps of logic and coincidence that are rife in Grisham's writing. It amazes me that critics, the media, and Hollywood all fawn on Grisham's pap, when other writers like Scott Turow have written much, much better tales in the same genre.
