So many boards are shutting down or going to internet and often times have to drop certain conferences. My sysop provides a very large variety of things to choose from, but I guess not all do. I'm happy the mystery conference is going to be around. Will get back with you later to update you on what I'm reading. The private library in our building has a wonderful selection of mysteries to choose from. It's only a matter of making a decision what to read next. That's the hard part. (G). However, there's always Poe and Doyle who did a few decent short mysteries. And of course, Asimov's Dr. Urth is an interesting detective too, as well as R. Daneel and Lije Baley. Tell me I'm > wrong, please? Hi Dorothy, This echo is not going to shut down. All the echos distributed by means of what they call "the backbone" need to be listed in the master list of all the echo conferences, the Echolist. The listings need to be renewed every six months, so the backbone can see that the echos are still alive and that someone is looking after them. I have the password for the listing, and I'll send in the renewal this weekend when it won't cost so much to call (the current echolist keeper is in Canada). So not to worry, everything is under control. --- Opus-CBCS 1.73a * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: E2D00002 Date: 02/08/97 From: JAN WERTZ Time: 11:22pm \/To: FRED RUNK (Read 3 times) Subj: Short Mysteries Well, I don't know of anyone who routinely does short ones. However, one of the Brother Cadfael books out last year had 4 mysteries, 2 good ones, and 2 rather so-so. If you like Westerns, Louis Lamor had a good bunch in his Chick Bowdrie books. They concern a Texas Ranger back in the days of the old West. Actually, although Louis Lamor is known for his novels, I think he did better with short stories. Tony Hillerman has a nice tape out. It is a tongue in cheek look at 2 actual events. One is 'The Great Taos Bank Robbery'. The other is the 'Flood of???"
