The one about the hockey team bored me a bit, HF> since I had no interest in hockey. The one about the dog show HF> in CT was a fast-paced romp. Emma Lathen is really two women -- Mary J. Latis and Martha Hennissart -- one a lawyer and the other an economist (I think). They have also written, under the name R. B. Dominic, a very amusing series of mysteries about a Congressman from Ohio. I was fortunate enough to pick up their first Thatcher book, _Banking on Murder_ when it was new in the mid-1960s so I read them in order as they came out. Not to be missed IMHO. Your library still ought to have them. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/Wildcat5! v2.0GY * Origin: (PC)^3 BBS : 716-723-8489 (1:2613/388) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DGQ00003 Date: 12/18/96 From: MAUREEN GOLDMAN Time: 09:40pm \/To: RICHARD WEEKS (Read 4 times) Subj: What? Or call (toll free) The Mystery Book Shop at 888-434-3226, in the US, outside GA ... if Mark is at work. He'll look it up in the automated Books In Print, and order it if anyone wants. On major authors like her, we often have "new" books in stock even if they went OP a couple years ago. That's not counting the Search Service that should be in operation as of Jan 2. In fairness, besides the local library and ourselves, if anyone is in a metropolitan area, they should check the yellow pages AND white pages for bookstores that have MYSTERY in the name, or something similar, e.g., "CRIME TIME" might be a specialty store. The reason for checking the White Pages as well is that many large cities are now broken up into zones. The stores can't afford yellow page listings in all them but may be in the other zones' White Pages. Atlanta, for instance, has a local call zone larger than most states and 15 zones. DC-area is much smaller but a person in "Northern VA" wouldn't find a store on the Maryland side of the area just by looking in their own Yellow Pages. --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: Ice Fire 423-267-3789 (1:362/629) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DGS00000 Date: 12/21/96 From: RICHARD WEEKS Time: 06:10pm \/To: IRV KOCH (Read 4 times) Subj: Re: What? IK> trying to lure them into talking about clubs, festivals, and whatnot How about ideas for mysteries. You won't need to muck about with characters, just the deed, how it was done, why, and how they slipped up. I bring this up, because I'm a storyteller(indian thing, can't get the training to be a shaman) and I love to tell mysteries. I'm always looking for ideas, and twists, but most mystery books are contrite, confusing, or 90% of the time(if possible) I have it solved before the final chapter. Me!
