IK> I can keep the rates under $70 per night for 2 people, for rooms, IK> but they are not giving facilities away anymore, and charge LOTS for IK> banquet. I thought I was going to get off easy without costs for IK> Artshow and Masquerade, as well as other things, but a 200 - 250 IK> person Mystery/CrimeFiction conference, with higher demands (higher IK> class members ) actually turns out to be a bit more expenive than IK> the same size SF convention. IK> The local denizens won't tolerate the dumps, etc., that sf fen will. Now, now. You'll have the crossover readers up in arms. Truly, I have a hard time spending so much on a convention as the mystery ones cost these days. I can't help but think that the money could buy me a whole stack of books, or a couple of rare ones. I get a lot more pleasure for my dollar from the actual books than from a convention. I detest banquet food and have to put up with that at least once a year already, at a medical banquet. Usually the medical banquet food is a whole lot better than any convention food, but it's still a banquet. Current read: A Cat With No Regrets by Lydia Adamson. I had sworn off these things after the last one I read, but this on was already on my shelf. It's a lot better than the previous one, but jarred me with a description of 4 or 5 streets bisecting the little town's main street. There must be a better word than bisecting when you're talking about more than two pieces. ... Paul Newman played Ross MacDonald's "Lew Harper" in a DM> movie called "Harper," in 1966; it was based on the book, "The Moving DM> Target." 10 years later - in 1976 - he again played "Lew Harper" in a DM> sequel entitled, "The Drowning Pool," based on the book by the same DM> name. Thanks for info. I may have seen both "Harper" movies then--THE DROWNING POOL sounds familiar. "ud" was from 1963, "ombre" and "arry and Son" (which you did not DM> mention) were in 1967 and 1984, respectively. DM> Ross MacDonald's hard-boiled detective, Lew Harper, was California DM> based. The author, himself, best looked the part of his literary DM> creation; Newman, in my opinion, did not. Still, the movie was okay. DM> If you like the Philip Marlowe style of writing, MacDonald is a master DM> of the genre. His Harper series is comprised of some 20 books, of DM> which some contain short stories! Ok, thanks. McGee is Florida, right? Haven't read any of the Marlowe books, but I'm fairly certain I've seen several movies based, perhaps loosely, on them. DM> For myself, I always pictured Robert Conrad for the role of Travis DM> McGee in T.V./film. Perhaps he's somewhat height challenged for the DM> part, but Holly- wood has a way of making shorter fellas look taller on DM> celluloid. My reason for Conrad as McGee? The description by DM> MacDonald of his creation as having those cold blue eyes and a "deep DM> water tan." There were 21 T.McGee books in total; I have them, and DM> have read them, all ... a highly enjoyable series. DM> Although I've enjoyed Sam Elliott in several of his movies, I simply DM> can't imagine him as a credible Travis McGee. How about Newman's eyes--aren't those blue? Just out of curiosity, many years ago I read a story serialized in the SAT EVE POST, I think, that had something to do with spies and a nuclear device on a boat.
