--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DFA00006 Date: 11/05/96 From: PATRICIA FERRARA Time: 05:51pm \/To: DOROTHY REYNOLDS (Read 5 times) Subj: James Patterson I just finished reading a mystery that you recommended. James Patterson's "Kiss The Girls". Talk about assault of the senses! Whew! I picked the worst time to read it, too, because I was alone until late in the evening for two nights in a row. I found myself jumping at every little noise. I will choose a better time to read "Along Came The Spider". Right now, I'm in the middle of Josephine Tey's "Miss Pym Disposes", which was also recommended here in this echo by Jan Perkins. Quite a change of pace... :) Patsy --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 * Origin: Orion's Sword | Bush, LA | (504) 867-9701 | V.* (1:3828/1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DFB00000 Date: 11/05/96 From: SUSAN BULLA Time: 05:30pm \/To: DOROTHY REYNOLDS (Read 5 times) Subj: New reads DR> Hello Susan: It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks Cornwell's DR> later books aren't up to her usual standards. May be getting burned out. ??? Maybe. I have never thought that dialog is her long suit (I can't get a bead on her cop lead character, oh *what* is his name??!! I can't even *imagine* anyone seaking as she has him speaking.) and maybe the novelty has worn off for her and it's harder to come up with a good plot. DR> Never heard of Davis but the title of the book is intriguing. This is the series set in ancient Rome whose lead character is Marcus Didius Falco, a public informer. It's fun. The "silver pigs" are ingots mined from Britain. DR> And I love Donald Westlake. Read everything of his I can get my hands n. DR> I think my DR> favorite of his is Drowned Hopes. Absolutely hysterical and after that my next DR> favorite of his is Bank Shot. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend DR> them. Now there is a prolific writer who never lets me down. yet. DR> Consistently good. "Drowned Hopes" doen't sound familiar, but I know I've read "Bank Shot" and I remember enjoying it although I couldn't tell you a thing about the plot. DR> Have you read any of Steve Martini's books? He's fairly new to the game but DR> is also a good writer. Books with twists and turns that keeps you guessing to DR> the very end. The kind of stuff I really enjoy. No I haven't. Will have to add his name to the To Read Queue, sigh .... DR> Trouble is, there are so many good mysteries about, and I enjoy reading so DR> much, I sometimes forget. Some of us will go to any lengths to DR> delude ourselves. Absolutely! (G). Perhaps I should have dr> warned you ahead of time, but somehow that sort of detracts from the dr> book don't you think? It's one of those that you are afraid to turn dr> the page and yet can't put it down. I don't often read this type of dr> book, and like you, have to go to something a little lighter when I do. Yes, it's one of those books that stays with you long after you put it down. I considered putting it down because I knew what it was doing to me, but you're right... I couldn't. It's sort of a sick fascination... I had to know what happened. What's more, I keep thinking about my next trip to the library. Will I pick up Along Came The Spider? Probably. dr> I'm slowly discovering more and more mystery writers, and having a dr> field day with them. Am into one of the Travis McGee seies by John D. dr> McDonald. Now there is a real change of pace. I do like him though. I'm sure I've read one of those. Is Travis McGee the one who lives a lavish lifestyle... parents are "old money"? That's the trouble with only reading one (I'm sure I meant to pick up others because I did enjoy the book I'm thinking of), it's often lost in the clutter of my brain. Doubt I'll have that trouble with James Patterson's books, though. dr> Nice to hear from you again. How's everything down Lousiana way? It's dr> lovely here. Cool enough for sweats, (which I love to wear). They seem dr> so comforting somehow. =}. The weather was absolutely gorgeous today, and is expected to continue to be cool and dry for several days. I love it when a cool front arrives in time for the weekend. Yesterday was hot and muggy and very un-autumn-like. I do not like hot weather.
