We'd appreciate info on publication order, plus whether they should be read in pub-date-order or some other way. Apparently a lot of the modern reprints have been re-copyrighted, so the original pub dates have been obscured. Thanks in advance for any info. --- QM v1.31 * Origin: Sci-Fido II, World's Oldest SF BBS, Berkeley, CA (1:161/84.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DD500002 Date: 09/03/96 From: STEVEN HORN Time: 09:43pm \/To: FRED RUNK (Read 3 times) Subj: Ellis Peters Fred Runk (1:300/6.2) wrote to Steven Horn at 11:56 on 01 Sep 1996: FR> I guess we will never know now. I accidently erased your message re Sharon McCrumb. You had commented on the fact that her funny ones were of little substance. They are the best kind for light summer reading. On the other hand, Pretty Peggy-O was not funny - it was about the Vietnam war. That was a war I didn't pay a lot of attention to. After all it was the Americans who were fighting not the Canadians. Also I never could figure what it was all about. Several mysteries I have read have dealt with the war and especially its after effects - usually having a veteran of the war as a character. Pretty Peggy-O was quite different - still disturbing. War is hell and continues to be so long after the actual fighting is over. I just finished an excellent book by Laurie R. King called "To Play The Fool". A lot of research goes into her books and she doesn't write to a formula. The other one I read was "Beekeeper's Apprentice" which I read because we are beekeepers. Her beekeeping facts were good which impressed me. So long for now, Joan (tuckey@planet.eon.net) ... Like you, I thought "If I'd Killed Him When I > Met Him" funny but it didn't have a lot of substance. In fact, > I'm not sure any of her Elizabeth MacPherson books do. > "If Ever I Return, Pretty Peggy-O" on the other hand has a lot of > meat as does "She Walks These Hills". They may be mystery novels > but they capture a sense of place and time which I find > fascinating. I'm still waiting for my local bookstore to come up > with a copy of "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" but I suspect > I'll like it. Be patient. I thought "The Hangman's beautiful Daughter" was the best of the Ballad series. It gives Nora Bonesteel a good introduction and that thread continues quite well in the lastest of the series, "The Rosewood Casket". The newest is not being called a mystery...it's more of a mainstream story with a bit of mysterious stuff thrown in. I bought the hardcover the first time I spotted it at the bookstore and read it in two sittings! The "ghostly" aspect was pretty easy to figure out; it was the WHY that was intriguing. An excellent addition to a wonderful group of stories and characters. (Needless to say, Nora is my favorite in the continuing cast of characters!) On the other hand, I can't seem to warm up to the MacPherson books. I've tried a few of them, but can't seem to even get half way in before giving up. <<< Debbie >>> --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: chocolate, Chocolate, CHOCOLATE: Roch, NY (1:2613/321.1) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 244 MYSTERY Ref: DD500005 Date: 08/23/96 From: JIM MAGILL Time: 12:49pm \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: TV Mysteries Greetings to all; speading of mysteries, the best mysteries on TV and the best detectives appear on the Arts and Entertainment network and are, naturally., English productions. Only nitpick with the Julie Smith is the 2 stop ride on the BART when the MUNI runs more frequently, would have been cheaper, and is one level of escalators less to ride. I suppose there might be a good reason for the characters to have taken the BART for that trip, but I can't think of one. Good luck with the Christmas planning. It's a sensible approach, though some folk end up buying twice as much when they start shopping early.
