Howdy Delores... DER> Well, I just devoured another one! I'm still plodding along here with mine. Not much movement going on. I watched MYSTERY! last night--a rerun of a presentation of Ngaio Marsh's "Inspector Allyn." I like the acters the director selected to play the major characters--definitely not "pretty faces" and they do not conflict with how I had imagined them. Even the increase in SB> drug-resistant strains of known, common maladies is frightening. Hi Susan, Apparently one of the major causes of so called common illness' becoming drug resistant is the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. Doctors prescribe them for every little sniffle, people take the drug until they start to feel better and then stop taking it. The drug kills the weak germs and the most drug-resistant bugs are still alive and get passed on to reproduce even more resistant ones. The people recover because the body's own immune system finally kicks in and does it's job. That's as I've heard it anyway. Back on topic (what a wonderful idea!) I just finished John Straley's 'The Curious Eat Themselves'. This is the middle of the 3 Alaskan mysteries that he has written, and my favorite. His narrative is very evocative and full of telling detail about life in Alaska. In this one he visits Prudhoe Bay in search of a suspect (and also trying to link up with his ex). His little points about the odor of diesel, and about life in the camps is right on the button. His character are real, believable people and his plots flow to satisfying conclusions. If you can't tell, I really like Straley's books! I just started Laurie King's 'With Child' and it also looks to be a winner. Bob 8-{) --- Blue Wave/Max v2.20 * Origin: TechTalk; Calgary, Alberta. Hello Dennis.... DER> Are you saying that you don't think that the articles are true? DER> Unfortunately, they are all too true, and too frequent, and cancelling DER> your newspaper will not make them go away. DM> There's no logic conflict. Whether the articles are true is not the DM> point, and articles published in a daily newspaper can be presumed to DM> have some basis in fact. DM> The issue is simply one of being deluged in bad news. Many local DM> newspapers take the sensationalist approach, and give prominence to DM> stories featuring gruesome events, such as children being brutalized. DM> The overt reason for the choice is public service, of course, warning DM> folks of things to beware of. The true reason is maintaining or DM> boosting circulation, in the face of competition from TV. It leads DM> to a skewed approach to news presentation, and to a level of fear that DM> may not really be justified in the readership. As someone who suffered physical, sexual and emotional abuse as a child, I guess I have the mentality that the more people are made aware of it, the more it is publicized in all it gruesome, horrendous detail, the more educated people become, the more the general public is likely to intervene, rather than turn a blind eye. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be true. Child abuse is more prevalent now than it has ever been, and yet there is no increase in those that are being charged with the abuses. Several months ago, a man was sent to prison for life under the "three strikes and your out law". He had been found guilty of burglary twice before. His third offense was theft of a pizza. Of course everyone was outraged, and said it was not the intent of the law that such "trivial" crimes would be handled in this manner. Earlier this week, a man was arrested in a neighboring town. He was charged with 3 counts of child molestation, 3 counts of child rape and failure to register as a convicted sex-offender. He had been to prison twice for the same offenses. However, the County Prosecutor pointed out that he could not be tried under the "three strikes" ruling as those crimes were not included in the ruling!!!! We claim to be a civilized society, with concern for our children. Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. der ...
